Perhaps a timely question seeing as this Sunday will mark 250 years since the Battle of Quebec, when the French soldiers in Canada were soundly thrashed out of the city and British dominance of America was assured!

If the residents of Quebec vote that they want to leave Canada, then yes, they should become independent.
And considering Canada considers things like Kosovo its own nation, then I can see no logical reason why they would want to hold onto Quebec if the Quebecois voted against staying in Canada.

Quebec has always felt as if they are separate from Canada
Ah, you know what I'm like. I'm not exactly partisan in my ideologies, on principle...three guesses what I voted?![]()
Voted yes because it is a plausible scenario that has waxed and waned in popularity over the years in Quebec and IIRC has been put up for debate/vote before, but only if the people of Quebec vote on it and decide they wish to leave Canada. I guess my vote for yes isn't, "yes they should", but "yes the could".
No. They already had their chance and they voted against it.
It's a totally new thing, they call it democracy
As someone said above, it's a possible scenario.
I hope the best for Quebec, and it's a delicate decision which concerns only the québécois if a new referendum is casted.
(they said "no" in the last one...)
Anyway, la francophonie is a strength, a real national pride out there (judging from Europe and as a francophone myself)
It's simply great.
Vive le Québec libre! Vive la Wallonie libre! Vive la francophonie!
Not "many", only "some" french... well...
I know exactly what you mean, and there are that kind of tension between some idiotic frenchmen and some other as idiotic quebecois... such things happen when the cultures and way to live are separated, look at the USA and the UK for instance, a good parallele in my humble opinion.
In the case of France/Quebec, to make it short, you have some Parisians who dont give aabout Quebec and consider them as rednecks (as you said) and the quebecois' reaction is natural, they hate these particular arrogant frenchmen. But it's minority.
Anyway, in most cases France and Québéc has very tight relations, special conventions allowing french to work in Québéc and quebecois to come live in France.
It's complicated and cant be said in a thread like that (would take too long and I doubt my english skills would suffice to be 100% clear), but despite the small tensions between the two communities (french and quebecois) they are very linked to each other, and above all by their love for their language
They refer to us as their cousins d'Europe and we say that they are our cousins d'Amérique. And they are among the francophonie the best defenders of the french language.
Amicalement, Draksen

Patriotism... is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.
This whole comparison of your 'struggle' to the one my father and his fathers faced continues to amase me. You lads want to seperate from Canada because you speak French. You are not oppressed in any way. No one tells you that you cannot speak your language that you must speak English, no one tells you that you cannot own land, vote, or find work. Your children don't starve. You are not illegally imprisoned. You are not under constant threat of violence or death. In fact if anything the rest of English speaking Canada makes concessions to your minority.
Just because everyone else doesn't croak Froggy is not reason enough.
