Hey everyone, i am looking to see what strategies people use to expand their borders, through sheer military power, sneaky tactics or diplomacy?

Well diplomacy is out of the picture, it just won' t work so. I am trying to expand the same way as history did. First kicking out hannibal, retaking Sicilia and securing the borders with gaul. Invade Greece and Iberia (only take carthaginian cities) prepare the invasion of north Africa.

i'm doing something totally different, i'm really not worrying about history, especially since i'm not at all fussed about the marian reforms.
i'm currently battling for greece, and i'm just taking it as things happen,
as to the how? i usually go for a slow and steady expansion of one place at a time, then consolidte and continue. The roman style bull at the gates tactic doesn't really work with this mod (or any rtw mod) so i just make my way slowly and unstopably (well the second bit is hopefull thinking)
Similar as Hesus, a bit of historical expansion.
I start by clearing Italy from Carthage and Gaul armies. The sooner the better. Taking Tarentum as fast as possible to limit naval invasions. Building up the economy right from beginning is key (disband unnecessary units), the two mines to be built asap after the walls.
Thereafter I take Mediolanum (this will be one of my military centers with all military buildings since population growth is high and it has good geographical coverage), and after some years I also take Nicea. Normally this will make Gauls not hyper aggressive, just aggressive ...
Sicily next. Lilybeon will be another military center. Thereafter I launch an invasion on Greece and Iberia simultaneously. Taking most of Greece will boost the Economy dramatically. Military centers at Naupactus and Toletum.
After that I should have around some 30 provinces, great economy with full building cues in all settlements, lots of legions and I can plan an expedition to Cilicia or similar. An invasion with a foothold in North Africa as well of course.
At this stage expansion goes in a much slower pace.
Similar historical trend (Italy, Sicily, Carthage) however I decided to push Gauls north just after consolidating Iberia... I'm planning to invade Greece when I have most of Gaul lands up to Germanic borders. But I'll leave a buffer from Germania...
Nearly the same here. Took, italy, sicily and also took the lands at the shore to get access to iberia on land and so i could attack from north and south. after that I decided to take iberia completely including the gaul territories and palma for cash and to stop gaul to swarm through my territory over and over. Now I just finished my campaign in north africa. Carthage is gone and right now I'm building up the cities to get to reforms asap. After that I plan to take a few greek cities because they grew way too strong already.losing crete and some cities in southern mainland should keep them well-entertained. Next target is gaul who kind of gave up on me and prefer to quarrel with germania and greece.
I'm still not quite sure when I should go for rome. Should I do it right away after reforms kick in or wait till my empire is even greater? I never tried to do that in 6.4 so I'm really clueless when to do (or try) that.
LOl good straegies so far

Original 7.0 is much improved compared with 6.4. Restricted recruitment of generals and auxilia for example. FOW on, AI Generals not suicidal and also the superpower fix works differently with AI factions actially fighting each other depending on what you as player do.
WEll about the generals. In my campaign, only thing I can fight now are the Greeks. Germans were actually extremely weak and died way too quickly (reduced to like 5-7 provinces), Scythians are still the strongest in army but I dun plan going on there yet, no one else is really leftand the greek generals - I sometimes target them with all my archers, which are usually 3-5 units so when several thousand arrows lay on him, he dies. So I dont worry about their suicides. I can kill them

Im only talking about Roman AI generals, for those battles when they are not managed by the player. I always choose to manage all armies present on the battlefield but sometimes the computer does not allow me to do that.
In 6.4 my AI roman generals always went ahead of the legion in a suicidal charge alone towards the enemy. Very frustrating to loose good generals but that was fixed with 7.0

not only weird, it's often painful when it happens. i learned that the hard way by losing 2 family members and a general who came into the fight without my permission (or at least I thought so) . short story: a mixed group of weakened units plus new generals/governors coming from the opposite direction, a complete carthagian army with 2 and a half elephant units, no chance to help them out, especially when you don't even expect them to enter the battlefield and notice them way too late. I got alarmed by one of the elephant units moving into the wrong direction and they were pretty much dead already. didn't load anyway although I lost one of my most promising family members. it was a good lesson i will not forget.
How you tell promising family member?I just pick one, let him lead legion and if he has some management, he stays at conquered city and newly trained takes the legion over.

Well he had 8-10 influence and good managing skills, seemed loyal and was not even in his mid-thirties. he would have been a perfect fit for cities like carunium, olisipo or gades. I would have picked him as the new faction heir but unfortunately he never made it that far. you're not trying to tell me that you pick a random family member to govern difficult areas regardless of his skills as a governor, do you? in most of the other areas closer to italy I also just pick one who is available at the time, but in some areas like the west coast of iberia this wouldn't work unless you want to lose the province over and over until by accident a competent governor takes the job
i don't even pay that much attention to it. One gets chosen, another doesn't
LOl i got pissed being Romans so i choose my fav race, the greeks, 25000 dollars to spend and lotta provinces and i have elite spartan hoplites in Sparta ready to take rome, ahh the fun of it all, just sit back and watch the slaughter
