Default Why (some) Americans dont work on Labor day

I have often wondered (usually while I'm at work) why many workers got the first Monday of September off. After reading a bit, i have to ask, Is Labor day worth keeping as a holiday? It can/should be moved closer to Thanksgiving/Christmas to make it a more functionable holiday. Thoughts?

For those that are cloudy about Labor day, read this link:

Move it close to another and it just blends in. If you place right next to another holiday it disapears. School children love it. Government employees love it. And Movie theaters love it because it brings in an extra bit of cash on a slow weekday.

And the reason its that day, is the international worker's day is May 1. But that is connected to the Communist Party so the government created Labor Day now.
