The President's Speech to Students

I am surprised there is not already a thread here about it, or one that I did not miss.

I am at an absolute loss of words here. Not only are politicians in uproar about this, but anyone connected with schools that is a republican.

I started back working for the local school district again. They issued a statement to the public saying that due to technology issues they could not air the live broadcast. It pissed me off enough I got myself fired because I went to the papers about it, and told them we could in fact air it, but the school board was made up of republicans who would deny our school children the chance to hear the President speak.

Seriously, have the conservatives been eating an extra helping of bat-

crazy crunch?

Yeah im with the OP, Republicans want us to teach Creationism in school but wont let the students hear a speech that encourages them to stay in school and set goals for themselves

that makes sense.....

They dont, but the ones in the big states do. Like Texas and California, who have the largest student enrollments in the nation. Further more, they are trying to pass a revision in Texas to make the history books focus on conservative values, while leaving out liberal ones.

Wanting != doing, President speech is however being done. It should be noted that in 91 Bush the senior did the same thing and DRUMROLL PLEASE...Democrats complained loudly, on tax payers dime, would help push Bush agenda etc. Funny how things seem to repeat but with different side of the coin complaining. Ive no problem with Obama speaking though the timing of it is very poor and would have been better to hold off when he wasnt involved in trying to push thru a major reform on a huge issue.

As I said in the official thread, just imagine the apoplectic fit the left would be in had Bush Jr. did the same thing.

Personally those opposed to this have it wrong. Its best when Obama speaks, it only helps their cause.

Republicans want to force schools to teach Creationism, or simply allow them the right to teach it?

There's a difference you know.

Creationism is ridiculous, but parents should be allowed to decide where and how their children are educated as I believe they are best suited to determine what's in the best interest of their child, and not the state.

I don't know if this speech is appropriate, I think if he were simply to make a video explaining his job, and what the office entails, it would be educational, but to speek to children directly in this way reeks of indoctrination and exploitation.

Yes, I'm sure you went to the papers to preserve your self integrity.

The lesson you learned is that when you are a low level employee and you go over your bosses heads you get fired. I think other lesson you will learn is you got fired for no reason because if the district is made up of republicans, they really don't care what you have to tell the paper about Obama.

You will be written off as a disgruntled democrat. No one will care and you will still be out of a job.

Also note not ALL Republicans join the ban the speech crowd. It's only the radical ones who are yelling about this. Rest of Republicans and conservatives really don't care about the Obama "Stay in School" speech.

That is the official letter.

1) The practical issues that I was part of submitting only consisted of not every campus had TVs in every classroom, so some teachers would have to move their students to a location with one. Mind you, this was limited to only twenty-classes that would be maybe 200 students out of the 30,000 our district has.

2) Lunches are always being rescheduled for less important things like pep rallies, holiday activities, school functions, etc. Not to mention the one place every school HAS TVs, is in the cafeteria.
