So aside from some minor errors I think it was a nice song. Some pointers though:

    • I didn't feel like there was a clear structure to the song, but some nice bits pieced together. I think it would be easier to give your song more of a character if there was a clearer path in the melody. Keep in mind that I only make this remark since there's only one instrument present. This brings me to my next point.

    • You said you played guitar as well, I would love to hear a guitar accompany the piano. That way you could cut back on some of parts of the song while still having the ability to flesh it out with the other instrument.

Anyway, nice song, a bit too dramatic for my taste but definitely good. I get the feeling that I've heard some small portions of the song in other circumstances, any musical inspiration for this piece?

That can be forgiven. Oftentimes, you don't even realise you're repeating something you've heard somewhere else.

Besides, the whole music business is built on plagiarism.

    @Eire

I loved it. As other have said, it lacks a little direction, but is a solid foundation to work on. For example, the phrase you start at just after 2:30 has a lot of potential as a bridge of sorts, imo.

Do not stop writing music, you have talent.

If you like, you can check out the piece I posted over at the 'Word Critiques' subforum:

Hearing my awkward efforts might hearten you

I only asked because, as ivan_the_terrible kindly pointed out, that musical inspiration is not uncommon (and I do it myself). This was not me trying to point out something negative, just an innocent inquiry as to whether you had any musical inspiration for this theme. It's not uncommon and in my opinion it's nothing to be ashamed of. If anything one should be proud and point that fact out, so other people can backtrack and discover what musical history lies behind. I was just curious.

No, nothing wrong with the inquiry. This one was completely out of nowhere, I literally translated how i was feeling in music as best i could.

Yep, that's right. It's not uncommon for serious musicians to sample other tracks as well. It's fine as long as you get permission and give credit.

I didn't use anything as inspiration.

I know nothing about musical theory or anything like that. Or very little.

You don't really need to know. Okay, that's somewhat a lie but still. It's a really good base for a song, all I'm saying is that you should experiment a little with it.

How well do you understand tablature, could you write up a simple tab for us? I could never guess the chords you're playing. It reminds me in parts of Metamorphosis. I like it, but you need to work on the rhythym.

Thank you very much not many people have heard it because I tend to keep the songs to myself. I will try to tab it for you.

Philip Glass is a modern genius. As I was saying earlier about rhythym, you could try your hand at Glass' technique. It's quite advanced, but technically simple. Have patience with this guy, he's annoying but explains things quite well.

i am already learning his technique. Funnily enough I was utilising something like that for some of my other songs.

It'll serve you well, his style seems to be in fashion again these days. What with Battlestar Galactica and Watchmen using some of his work.

You work on your rhythym and report back! I'd like to see where you're headed with this.
