Do you capture a Roman eagle only when a first cohort is forced to fight to the death?
I have routed and subsequently destroyed a lot of them, but my generals' captured eagles don't keep pace with them.

Not sure, I noticed the same thing, sometimes you get the eagle taken message and other times you don't. I can tell you that it is not, seems random.only when a first cohort is forced to fight to the death
Having said that, successfully taking 3 eagles with 1 General seems to make the Romans really scared of the army he commandsWell they ran away from me a lot in my 1st ever GCS campaign anyway.
The entire first cohort has to be downed until every single legionnaire is dead before you get the eagle.
Keep some light cavalry to chase down routing first cohorts and YOU BE STEALING THERE EAGLEZ!

Yeah, thanks, should have read the post properly, I assumed he had killed them all. However it still doesn't guarantee you getting the eagle, and the reason for that I don't know.
No, it doesn't work that way. I am talking about battles ending with complete extermination of the enemy army or at least their infantry.

oh, good. Then we are no longer alone in this. Oi! Dead Romans, give me captured Eagle!
IIRC it's just a bit of a random event.
