For those of you who didn't know, The Gathering Storm (book 12 of The Wheel of Time) is due to be released on the 27th of October. When the author, Robert Jordan, died before finishing the series his estate chose Brandon Sanderson (Elantris, Mistborn) to write the remaining three books based on the written work Jordan left behind. The next two, and final, books in the series are estimated to be released in November 2010 and November 2011, respectively.

Tor.com now has the first chapter of TGS up on their website, both as audio and text. You can check it out here (you have to register, unfortunately, though it is free).

Yes I know I'm actually pretty curious if he (or actually they) can pull off a good ending of the series (which should have happened 5 books ago IMO).

But since I don't have the time to do a reread right now I've decided to wait untill all 3 are released, then do a reread and then read the last part. Biggest problem will probably be avoiding spoilers for the next 3 years but I'll manage.

    More news:

    • The PROLOGUE to The Gathering Storm will be available as an eBook purchase beginning on September 17th. The price will be $2.99 and will be available from Amazon.com, BN.com, Tor.com, as well as other online vendors.
    • Tor will be releasing the ENTIRE Wheel of Time series in various eBook formats beginning with the release of The Eye of the World beginning on October 27th. Each book will be released in series order on a monthly basis after that. The text of the books has been optimized for the ebook reading experience, and retain all illustrations and maps from the physical books. Pricing is not yet available
    • And that’s not all — Each of the WoT eBooks mentioned above (not the TGS prologue) will include new “cover art” by different professional artists. Tor is commissioning a different artist for each book, so you’ll see brand new art for each one of the books in the series.
Read all of it on Dragonmount.com.

I'm a bit disappointed because there's a year between the release of each of these last parts after we've had to wait so long for the final part (part 11 was released in 2011). The style of the first chapter is close enough to Robert Jordan's with a lot of elaborate descriptions that only repeat information that we already have. I was afraid that each of these final parts would be a bit thin compared to the others, but the gathering storm is 784 pages . Click here for cover art.

The second one is all but finished already so I think they're just trying to give each part time to settle after release so they can hype up the next one.

I found it possibly to repeat a bit too much we already have, but I hope I was just trying to hard to tell how similar it was to Jordan so I'm finding differences where they are none.

I'm really looking forward to this. I'm on book 8 now of my re-read.

Ok I've just read the prologue, wasn't to impressed by the writing style. I'm now wondering if it's less good then the first books or if my own taste has changed, guess it's the later.

On the positive side, I was drawn into the world like I've never been out of it. The world of the wheel of time remains as on of the richest ones ever created. I also found it very positive that
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
finaly Masema was killed for good, one of the big flaws of WoT was jordan's inability to kill off all those annoying 'minor' bad guys

anyhow, it didn't appealed to me enough to get the book when it comes out. I'll still keep waiting untill everything is done and than start a proper reread of the series including the sanderson books.

Jordan is like a zombie, even death cant put an end to his godawful series. We need to call in a priest, a rabbi and an imam to exorcise this demon. Ok seriously I just hope its not hundreds of pages of where one thing happens and the rest is filler like most of previous books.
