Is it possible to have an ancilliary change the stratmap skin of a model? If so, what is the specific trigger I'm looking for?

Beats me. But a beginning would be to trace how it is triggered now.
Check the descr_strat file and the priests that you know start as bishops, crosscheck their traits (I think priest 2) against e_d_character_traits, same with the king model that is used in the brittania campaign as I mentioned, there I think it is leader 2.
Yes, the attribute in EDCT is called "Level". Each level equals the entry in ehhmmm, forgot the name of the file that assigns strat_models, but it should not be difficult to find. You can assing each level a displayed name in expanded.txt. I haven't seen it working with ancillaries, but it is worth a try. Otherwise grant a hidden trait that has the "level" together with the ancillary
For example, when you want to make a character Despotes with a special start model you would give him the trait (in case it does not work directly with ancillaries) the usual way. This trait might give him the "Level 3", what would be the Despotes start model. In expanded.txt you would assign the name "Despotes" to this level, that way he would be labled "Byzantine Despotes" on mouseover.
Removing the trait when losing the ancillary should reset the strat model (never tried it, but it should work).
The problem is that these levels seem to work cumulative. So when he has Level 3 = Despotes and becomes faction heir, what could be Level 4, he would that way have Level 7, what might be a patriarcha or the faction leader, and would be displayed that way.

hadn't realised that was the case,The problem is that these levels seem to work cumulative. So when he has Level 3 = Despotes and becomes faction heir, what could be Level 4, he would that way have Level 7, what might be a patriarcha or the faction leader, and would be displayed that way.
if so the trick would be to combine all the things that can possibly give different strat map 'Level' effects into one trait with various trait levels for the affected faction, then set the threshold numbers so that the only way the person can arrive at the right level is to have the correct 'x' number of that trait's points.
So say he's faction leader, make sure that level of the trait requires 100 points to meet the threshold to get the trait level that has "Effect Level 2" or whichever it is.... and trigger for becoming faction leader is only thing with the +80 or whatever from the other possible candidates to get him into that range... might take a bit of maths to work out if you're doing something complex....![]()

Problem with battle model is it only works for leader/heir. It seems to be another one of those last-minute application things, where they needed it for William Wallace and Richard the Lionheart or whatever, so they implemented it and tied it to the leader/heir distinction. It could well have been tied to a method similar to that of the Level command, but noooooooooo....![]()

These are the traits for the leader strat models from the brittania campaign. It does not appear they are accumulative as the heir has model two (model one being the default for named characters) and the leader model three. Theoretical it should be possible to extend the model level and assign the models as per level.

Dont' forget he is no longer FH when becoming FL.
Here is an example from dHRR:
descr_character.txt
EDCTCode:faction burgundy dictionary 2 strat_model teutonic_general ; default level 0 strat_model teutonic_general ; level 1, heir strat_model teutonic_general ; level 2, faction leader strat_model northern_generic_emperor ; level 3, emperor strat_model northern_generic_king ; level 4, crowned king strat_model catholic_bishop ; level 5 Archbishop battle_model german_general ;Northern_General battle_equip gladius, chainmail shirt helmet and rectangular shield
Because the emperor always is FL (level 2) he is only assigned one additional level to reach 3. If this trait would have "Effect Level 3" the emperor would in fact have Level 5 cumulative and be displayed as an archbishop.Code:;------------------------------------------ Trait Emperor Characters family Level Emperor Description Emperor_desc EffectsDescription Emperor_effects_desc Epithet Emperor_epithet_desc Threshold 1 Effect Authority 1 Effect Level 1

Folks unless I'm mistaken you can specify the stratmap model via spawn_character or spawn_army.
you're correct
