Default graphical issue for custom texture

Whenever I put a custom texture to a unit there are certain graphical issues that come up. At first I thought that it had something to do with sloppy use of Gimp in editing the .dds file, but it looks like whenever I open a vanilla .dds file and save it again (without making any changes) there is a grey outline around the ribbons on the hats of the units.

attached is a screenshot comparing an unopened texture to an opened (with Gimp) but otherwise unchanged texture.

I imagine the problem might have something to do with proper compression of the .dds files but I have been trying all the compression options that Gimp has!

    thanks for any suggestions!

Not sure on Gimp, as i use Photoshop and have had this issue before.
What you need to do if Gimp has the tools is paint around the crest using clone stamp tool (or whatever the equvilant tool is in gimp) so that the crest is set against the same background as the rest of the hat.
To be honest the crest looks good with the white border!, it stands out and makes the units look less "attack of the Clones" look
