Splice is being produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Vincenzo Natali. You’ve probably heard of del Toro: His past films include Mimic, Blade II, Hellboy and the critically acclaimed horror/fairy tale for grownups Pan’s Labyrinth (which reminds me, I need to add that last one to my rental list). Who is Natali? His most famous movie as far as American audiences are concerned would be the most excellent sci-fi/horror film Cube. The story revolves around a couple of geneticists (played by Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) who decide to throw ethics out the window and experiment with splicing together the genes of a human with that of animals. They illegally create a hybrid (pictured below) and try to hide her from the world. As you can no doubt guess, they probably don’t succeed.Director Vincenzo Natali says that the film is:

“…about finding humanity in the monster and… the monsters that lurk within humanity.”

thats my impression of it as well. However I imagine that its one of those things where she grows up in a lab and all nice , but when she gets into the real world and is called a monster by everyone, then she actually turns into one.

The taint of Chaos is strong in this mutant. Purify it over a cleansing fire! In Sigmar's name!

    why?
simply because it is not a natural mutation-heck that'd be understandable-rather, it is a human made abomination.

now call me unenlightened, i dont care if it has empathy or whatever, my first instinct is to kill it with fire as well but i would save the research.

well besides the fact that I think genetic engineering will ultimately destroy humanity, it will also likely bring us to new highs. People could be engineered to be resistant to diseases, live hundreds of years long, be smarter , run faster. Although it does not bold well for those who are El Naturale ( see film Gatica).

problem with that is that certain genes which we see as conducive to certain diseases (eg sickle cell anaemia) had an evolutionary function to it.
for eg sickle cell patients are more resistant to malarial infections, tho it's been a while since i read that paper. will have to dig it up.

so while it's good idea to GM babies to give them the best start in life, we've gotta really really know what each gene combo does.

ageing is another thing entirely, depending on whcih theory of aging one subscribes to.
