Default Pakistan has controlled the Millitancy

I think this is a great move and with hte holy month of Ramzan, its a great blessing to the Pakistan nation.

The regions of Swat, Dir, Bajuar and Mohammad have been cleared and indead the IDP have left Karachi and other major cities and gone back to those regions. With the addition of this, a new province (while its not clear, I feel it will be) is created to bring more governmental control over those regions. I've visted Gilgat and Swat in 1997, its a beautiful area, forested and a good tourist area should the facilities develop which I'm hoping my company does help in it.

Great news for Pakistan and for the Region. Now if only there was grreater border controls over Balochistan its millitant issues which are minor would disappear.

Other news, I wonder what are the two foreign captials that hate to see Pakistan and Iran working togeather?

The title can be intepreted in two ways:

    a) Pakistan have managed to rein in the militant groups, as the OP have intended to say, or

    b) Pakistan have managed to exert control over the groups, just as the ISI have been in bed with the Taliban pre-invasion days, which is less rosy and more ethically questionable

But that aside, I guess even those in the "badlands" can't fight on an empty stomach.

    Pakistani Taliban regroup in Malakand
    By Bill RoggioAugust 16, 2009 1:04 AM

The Taliban have regrouped in the district of Malakand in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province as an operation to drive out the extremist from Swat is winding down.

Taliban fighters are reported to have taken control of the Palai region in Malakand, a district that borders Swat. Over the past three days, the Taliban beheaded two policemen and kidnapped a local politician. The Taliban are also attempting to recruit in the region.

The policemen were captured by the Taliban as they visited the region, and were promptly beheaded. The politician was kidnapped after he refused to purchase weapons for the Taliban and provide young men to train and fight with them.

"The Taliban are strengthening their position in some parts of Malakand," a resident told Daily Times. Policemen and government officials no longer enter the Taliban-controlled regions, fearing being kidnapped and murdered.
Recent attacks in Khyber and Swat makes clear the Taliban are getting ready for another round of appalling violence. The Army will not go into Waziristan, it all has been a joke. The Taliban are anything but defeated, in 2010 they'll be back with a vengeance.

There is a difference between controlled and destroyed.

And if the Long War Journal is biased (which it probably isn't) its biased towards the Pakistani government destroying the Taliban.

You'll need to elaborate on that, because I have no idea how one event (end of the American presence in Afghanistan) leads to another (Taliban being destroyed)

OK. When Pakistan says the Taliban are destroyed, don't believe it. They aren't. The Taliban have many bedfellows in Pakistan, and Pakistan lies through it's arse.

Oh no, what I meant to ask is (sorry if I'm being a bit vague), how do you expect the Americans to finish the job. This is not an anti-US rant ("omgz MURICA EVIL" sort of thing); I'm just not confident that "superior military force" will translate to "victory over guerilla fighters".

    Cool.

It's not up to Americans to finish the job unless Pakistan lets them into their borderlands. Which they won't.

If they did, I could foresee a US victory.

Pakistan is not an ally of the US. It's a self-seeking prostitute at the current time.

that would probably relate to the fact that many, including myself, has doubts as to whether the Pakistani army has actually defeated the Taliban.

Erm, it's the other way around, finish the Taliban in Pakistan and the war in Afghanistan is over.

The Pakistani army couldn't destroy a cardboard box it would seem. They, like much of the pakistani infrastructure, are corrupt, underfunded, and woefully inficent at their jobs.
