How can Carthage keep dropping stacks on Sicily?

First I want to say I really like this mod. I played a long campaign with Greek city states on campaign difficulty hard and battle dificulty medium and after conquering Egypt and Asia I decided to try the Romans. The phalanxes can kill opponents with ease IMO. I conquered Italy but I have problems in Sicily. Is it normal that Carthage can drop stack after stack on Sicily while they only have Lilybaeum? My general who commanded the big army to defeath Pyrrus (I think) is killing stack after stack but every battle around 10-20% of his units dies and if Carthage can constantly drop stacks its not that much fun anymore.

One more question: will I be able to train new units with the reform if Roma has an imperial palace or does it need to be another Italian city?

you need to land a stack in carthage soil ASAP, and they usally stop sending stacks to your mainland. And with the reform i think its an imperial palace in roma

I think it doesn't matter wich Italian city has an Imperial palace.

It has to be another city in Italy.

About the Carthage trouble, conquering Lilybaeum will sort your troubles I think.

Yeah, taking Lilybaeum usually shuts Carthage down for a few turns at least.

I would launch D-Day on Carthage if I were you... Take out their homeland and they are out... thats easier said than done

like i said..land a force in africa..IF you could raise an army..

It'll have to be a strong army though if you want to take on the Carthaginian garrison script.

or you could make sure you have those onagers with you or infiltrate Carthage with spies so that they will open the gates for you and cancel out the Garrison Script... wow thats a mouthful...

I tried to stop the invasions by being aggressive.

hehe I tried to conquer carthage with a stack of veteran pre marian units. I got pwned 1 turn later by a reinforment army + the spawned carthage army. I simply got ran all over the place by 5 elephant units (not enough javelins!!!) and all those spawned sacred bands! my army routed after having suffered 90% casualty. I will be going back with 3 stacks. but I lost half of my vet army :(((

thats what the spies are for, to prevent the script by destroying the gates however it does take away the challenge

The Carthage script is weak, I did it with Syracuse with 2 3/4 stacks. The only thing to watch out for is reinforcing armies with ele's.... I hate Carthage's (and sometimes the Ptolemies) elephant spam so much.

how is the script weak? the army inside the city got like 10 sacred bands, the best carthage has. and 2 armor war elephants. plus 3 more elephants from the reinforcing army. it was simply superb! my vet army was like 5-8 experience. when I ran out of javelins from my 2 valites, I was like oh

as I watched the 4 remaining elephant units trampling my veteran soldiers to dust.

how can you call it weak when you need 3 stacks to destroy 1 city?

Its weak because it only spawns 3-4 Sacred Bands and the rest is crap civic infantry. With 1:1 numbers I've beaten it easily on Hard, and just barely on VH.

If you have too many hastatis you'll get pwnd, but principes / triariis can handle the sacred bands if you make sure not to fight them in bottle necks (you need to surround them). I just fought the carthage script last night with a fairly balanced pre-marian stack [50/50 hastatis/principes + 2 triariis + 2 archers] and managed to take the city at the loss of two hastatis, two principes and half a triarii (didn't actually lose a unit in the fight, but that's after combining the survivors). Still have to fight another full army next turn though.. We'll see how that goes

thats why before taking on Mighty Carthage, you should be prepared to face those damned war elephants. May I suggest skirmish cavalries (especially those numidian cavalry mercenaries), they tend to do much better than those velites since they are more mobile than the latter.
