    Default Question for Muslims

Why do you kiss the stone at Mecca?
    "Mors Certa, Hora Incerta."

"We are a brave people of a warrior race, descendants of the illustrious Romans, who made the world tremor. And in this way we will make it known to the whole world that we are true Romans and their descendants, and our name will never die and we will make proud the memories of our parents." ~ Despot Voda 1561

"The emperor Trajan, after conquering this country, divided it among his soldiers and made it into a Roman colony, so that these Romanians are descendants, as it is said, of these ancient colonists, and they preserve the name of the Romans." ~ 1532, Francesco della Valle Secretary of Aloisio Gritti, a natural son to Doge

    Google is your friend:

When pilgrims circle the Kaaba as part of the Tawaf ritual of the Hajj, many of them try, if possible, to stop and kiss the Black Stone, emulating the kiss that it received from the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

It is just a stone. Has no heavenly importance.

Only a few Muslims I've talked to about Mecca actually knew of the existence of this stone.

You mean they don't know they supplicate to the magic meteor?

If someone told me I had to bow down 5 times a day in a particular direction, I'd have asked why.

Muslims pray toward the Kaaba, and the magical meteor is only attached to the Kaaba so they are not exactly praying to it.

Are you implying that Muslims pray to the black stone?

    Yes, good old fashioned Idolatry.

I still find it fascinating that young Muslims can be so ignorant of their own history to NOT ask 'whats in the box'.

    I mean come on

    Also is this true?

    Main article: Black Stone
The Black Stone is a significant feature of the Kaaba, believed by Muslims to date back to the time of Adam and Eve.[7] Located on the eastern corner of the Kaaba, it is about 30 cm (12 in) in diameter and surrounded by a silver frame. All Hajj pilgrims must attempt to kiss the Stone as Muhammad once did. If they cannot then a flying kiss would be sufficient [8] Because of the large crowds, this is not always possible, and so as pilgrims walk around the Kaaba, they are to point to the Stone on each circuit.[9]

nooooo they are *wink wink* venerating the stone, not worshiping, come on...you know the difference lol. Venerating a stone, venerating some piece of crappy wood, doing all the bowing and kissing and praying in front of (somehow that's not worshiping) is TOTALLY not idolatry as long as it's from the REAL god, whoever that is.

I don't know if that is actually my point. My point was that if Muslims can criticize me for having an icon and/or a cross and say it is idolatry than like wise can be said about them concerning the stone.

If you read on further in the same link:

"Some Muslims are more willing to believe that the Stone itself has some supernatural powers. They believe that this stone fell from the sky during the time of Adam and Eve, and that it has the power to cleanse worshippers of their sins by absorbing them into itself. They say that the Black Stone was once a pure and dazzling white and it has turned black because of the sins it has absorbed over the years. "

"The single most important reason for kissing the stone is that Prophet Muhammad did so. No devotional significance whatsoever is attached to the stone. Kissing or touching the Black Stone is a reverential act of acknowledgment that God's hand directed its placement and construction. That Abraham and Muhammad, God's blessing upon them, had touched and kissed the stone and an acknowledgment that God had entrusted the 'corner stone' of His religious central focus for man upon that hollowed and sacred place."

According to Islam that stone came from heavens and if you kiss that is like kissing God's hand means obeying him but this is not idol worship as one of the companions of Prophet (pbuh) and his caliph Omer when kissed that stone said you are just a stone can't do something for me and can't cause a loss i am just kissing you because i saw prophet (pbuh) kissing you.

Daw Rome why did you have to give out answers so early, and I was hoping I could answer these questions, but the reason probably is because they were in the mood and overly excited, if you got the chance to see your holy relic, you might get a bit jumpy. There really is no significance to kissing the stone it's just for the fun of it.
I wear the chain I forged in life, I made it link by link and yard by yard. Is it's pattern strange to you? How would you know of length of the strong coil you bear yourself? It was as full, as heavy, and as long as this seven christmas eve's ago, you have labored on it since, it's a ponderous chain!

I kissed the stone when I went to Mecca with my family when I was like 10 years old.

Now thinking back about it, "WHY THE F DID I DO THAT?!?"
