I translated the article from italian online news (which are the only ones to have it)
Cmr mission in Turkey found a colossal statue of Apollo.
Recovered two blocks of marble, which belongs to the bust and the inferior part. Head in still a search in progress
MILANO - A 4 metres high statue rapresenting Apollo sat in the throne, has been found. The finding had place in Hierapolis, Turkey, thanks to Archaeological mission of Italian National Reseach Council and University of Salento. Excavations continues and now they are searching for the helios' head.
The Research - The presence of a marble statue of big dimensions - Francesco D'Andria, Director of Istituto per i beni archeologicy of CNR in Lecce, explains - was already been identified at the starting of 2009 campaign, toward the end of July. Now, the long operation of excavation has been completed with the recovering of two big blocks of marble, which belongs to bust and inferior part of the figure. The two fragments permits to reconstruct a marbled colossal statue, for over 4 metres in height.
The figure is sat on a throne and is wearing a tunic admirably draped with a transparency effect, which catch a glimpse of the mighty muscles. The colossal statue of Hierapolis - D'Andria explains - rapresents Apollo sat on a throne, while is holding the zither with left arm and it could refer to the cult of the god, in the close temple built under Roman Emperor Tiberius. The finding - underlines the expert - gains an exceptional value for the stylistic quality, for the particularity of imagery of cult and for the rarity of this kind of artifacts - less than 10 in Asia Minor
