Default [Strat Map Wonders Discussion] Khmer Empire

    Hey Folks,

Asking the help of researchers our team has, and the ones we are about to have.

The Khmer Empire faction needs some Eye-Catcher buildings for the Strat Map.

The Building that has already been modeled for this faction is the "Angkor Wat"

Could the Research Department please provide us with pictures and names of Buildings that are:

    -Eye Catchers(Special).
-From the Period of our mod. (around 1171 A.D.)
-Bigger format pictures than 640x480 please.
-There is no limit to the number of pictures, just when it becomes to much of a picture spam fest it might be better to give links to websites
-Spoiler Tags will come in handy
-Another thing which is very important is the location of the wonder. We don't want wonders to be packed in one area, while the rest remains empty, if you could find a map of the faction(country) and mark the wonder's location with a dot, that would be great.

Thanks are extended in advance, but may be repeated after your posts as well

The obvious choice here would be Angkor Wat. It was constructed during the reign of Suryavarman II who ruled from 1113-1150 AD. After his death, Angkor Wat was referred to as "Preah Pisnulok" which was the king's posthumous name. Verification is still needed for the spelling of that name.

Angkor Wat was the site of a major battle between the Kmer and the Champa in 1177 AD. Unfortunately, that's three years before the start period of the game, as listed on the information page. It's too bad, because wouldn't it be cool to have Angkor Wat on the battle map as a "castle", so the two forces could fight within the temple complex.

Also, if the presence of Angkor Wat gave any kind of bonuses to the faction, perhaps the amount of damage it took in the battle could affect those bonuses. Too bad the battle happened too early. Fortunately, though, Angkor Wat is still around, so finding pictures won't be difficult. I can add a bunch of pictures here if you like, but here's one for starters:

Coincidentally we already have an Angkor War model from a while ago. We also are receiving team contributions from a guy who modeled a completely 3D Environment recreation of Angkor, so the battlemap possibilities are certainly there.

Concerning it though, I'd prefer we not do any more work on it for the time being, because Angkor Wat is a frontrunner candidate for the possibility of having a unique strat map city model. That means the Angkor Wat wouldn't be next to the settlement, but part of the settlement. I believe I explained unique strat map settlements in another thread, but in essence we'd have a couple slots, to use on structures which pretty much constitute the city rather than are just a simple building, by manipulating the faction variants of unused factions(currently challenge, ghurid, and (maybe) scripting).

I'll try doing some research of my own since we seem to have a lack of researchers.

    Ok Khmer Wonders:

    First Building:

    -Ta Prohm(a Mahayana buddhist monastery)

Build in the late 12th century beginning of 13th century(close enough for me)

    Wiki Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ta_Prohm

Other Possibilities build around the same time on roughly the same location are:

    -Banteay Kdei
    -Neak Pdan

We could go for 1 of these 3 for the set location.

    Second Building:

    Phanom Rung Palace in Buriram:

Ruins are a good place to let our own imagination on the loose on how the building should have looked btw, I wonder what you guys think on that?

Darn its such a shame, 'Terrace of the Elephants' was built in the year 1181 A.D. are we really to discard such a building because it was build 10 years before starting time, Chris and Alex?
I myself would like to add it, since it'd be something different from all the Angkor Ruins that all look alike...

So, have you reached an agreement on what wonders to use? I might have a few ideas of my own, but they need a little bit of research; and a bit of explaining of the requirements for them to be used. I'm a bit confused by:
Darn its such a shame, 'Terrace of the Elephants' was built in the year 1181 A.D. are we really to discard such a building because it was build 10 years before starting time, Chris and Alex?
Yet we include Angkor Wat even though it's also built before the starting time? (Disregard any changes of our starting time since then if there are any, it's the requirements I need clarifying on)
I have been looking for it on the forum, but I've been reading so much here that it starts to dazzle me.
I would think that a wonder had to exist or being built (finished early into) our timeframe. Am I right?

Our start date has changed to 1180 AD anyway. We also agreed on another thread that certain wonders could be included even though they were built slightly after this date.

Angkor Wat was a multi-phase construction, it was built mainly during the reign of Suryavarman II (1113 –1150). It's true that it was sacked by the Chams in the 1170s, and Bayon was a built a bit later.

Wonders are not area in great need of research at present, but free feel to post your ideas. Make sure to check the threads tho as we have to limit the amount of wonders to each faction to about 4-5. Factions that require some attention would be Tibet, Xi Xia, Qara Khitai & Dali. The rest of world is pretty full already !

    Here's a good candidate:

    Phimai temple Complex:
Phimai Was one of major Khmer temples in modern Thailand, connected with Angkor by the Ancient Khmer Highway. the temple was built as a Buddhist temple, as Buddhism in the Khorat area dated back to the 7th century.

    Temple Location:

Very Nice Info Model won't be hard, only the texturing

Looks like one to put on the list, so I'll do that when I have the time.
