I play a campaign with Ireland, everything goes well, Scotland declares war on me, I reject them and decides to retaliate with the help of my faithful allies the English, only voila, the Pope threatens me of excommunication if I attack the Scots. I pay scant attention to threats, and attack their capital. Yet I am not excommunicated! I know how to solve this problem because it removes the realism! ^

my guess is he just lost the rest of his reputation with the pope for disobeying, got another warning of the pope, ignored it again and got what he called for.
