For some reason the North Africa campaign always springs to my mind, followed by Stalingrad and then just Hitler and Nazi's in general. The Holocaust is surprisngly far down the list of the things I think about.

It's the "H" word for me. The Holocaust.
Followed up by the struggle my country put up against Italy, then Germany.
Then my maternal grand parents joining the resistance against them and marrying up after the war.

I understand people putting Holocaust down the list in their minds when thinking about WW2. Any human mind wants to pretend like it didn't happen, as it is atrocious beyond reason, beyond comprehension. Yet happen it did, unfortunately.

Not really; it is rather from military term, holocaust did not affect the campaign much.

I don't think so. The more people over at the Allies found out about what was going on in the extermination camps and death factories, the more vindictive they became. I believe the same was true for the Soviets.

As for me, I don't think anyone of us can ever be considered a Human being without knowing full well all about the Holocaust and the reasons humanity was devastated as much. You see, it wasn't just 12.000.000 dead. Holocaust has been a stigma to everyone. Not just the Germans, all of us.

Think about it for a minute. Where would you be right now if your great grandfather had been rounded up, stashed into a wagon until a Polish marshland, marched into Auschwitz, handpicked to die by an SS officer, then sent to the showers for "decontamination". All that in the space of 2-3 days. He 'd have gone from someone to ashes in 3 days. After that even his remains would be used, even his dental fillings taken. Then, near our time someone would dispute he had ever existed, let alone died in this most atrocious way.

The OP said what is the first thought. I answered. The first post didn't speak specifically about battles or anything of the sort. You see, for all the battles fought, either won or lost, when it comes to the Holocaust we all lost, we all still lose, those who won't face up to it. This isn't about just the Jews or the rest of the victims. It is about all of the Human beings on this planet. This isn't about comparison with team 731 or other slaughters even genocides before or after as it is so evil it is just beyond compare. Created by the people who not even 70 years prior to that weren't even united. A people of musicians, philosophers, artists, poets, a nation which many consider a cradle of European identity. True as that may be, let nobody blame the Germans, as with the judaeophobia and anti-Semitism prevalent in Europe at that time, something like that was bound to occur, unfortunately. In Spain 1492 and Austria in the 1700's Jews were ordered to evacuate the perspective countries. Hitler was just the absolute worst anti-Semite, if we can judge by the body-count.

This is one of the reasons why I am absolutely against anti-Semitism in any shape or form it may take. The end result is obvious, clearly evident for all to see and what's even worse, worse than the denial that it ever took place, is that under similar circumstances, if the "ideology" that led to this most heinous of crimes against humanity isn't stomped out of existence, it can happen again.

I agree fully. The Nazis made it a war of extermination, so from Soviet perspective it was either win or be destroyed.

Maybe if it was just another imperialistic war, like WWI, there would be less motivation to fight.

Except for the fact that the Holocaust trains received greater priority than the troop trains. All the effort being spent on killing millions of people wasn't being spent on the actual war.

At the moment, the first things that pop up in my mind when thinking about WW2: Supermarine Spitfire, battle of Okinawa, Normandy landings (Omaha and Pointe du Hoc), B-29, MG-42, Battle of Stalingrad, 40mm Bofors

eh? that's a bit illogical, considering the Soviet Union (and communism in general) was atheist.

That's disgusting. This is anti-Semitic stormfront material. It doesn't belong here. Is there any doubt about the anti-Semite overtones of this post?

How is that anti-semitic, or do you think that stating fact is biased?

I always think about 101st Airborne Division ( I'm a fanboy of Band of Brothers ) and then on a Spitfire, and then about The Holocaust. We must remember, so we won't make the same mistake twice!
