So how do you manage early on?

So I am playing on MM as suggested, and in 3 turns I'm getting attacked on all sides with superior armies (stat wise). I've lost 5 cities in 7 turns, 2 to Carthage, 1 to the Greeks and 2 to the Gauls.

I can't build anything stronger than hastii, I don't even have roads.

So a hint or two would be helpful.

also you might want to check out my help guide (in my signature) as it has a lot of useful information to beginners (thought hesus' guide is genius for actual instruction)

Key word is - being aggressive and knowing how to fight the battles in SPQR. those two initial armies full of experienced troops are your gold, platinum whatever, key to survival. employ extensive use of Hastati as they are fast replacable and dun forget scriptorium academies stuff so they come with some chevrons and dont rout right away.

Well, I did the first 15 turn walk through and the AI decided to deviate from the plan on the third turn. It did give me enough of midset change from how you fight in MTW and vanilla rome though to give me a chance.

Hannibal is dead, but 1/2 of his army remains (had to withdraw that one), the Gauls are invading but I'm holding my own, and Carthage's days are numbered in Roman territory.
