Default So this is the great USA?

    Full Article
Here is a very very interesting article made by the Swedish "DN". It is the story of John Devoy and his wife.

Mary and John Devoy have been married for 17 years, but did not have any children.
Maybe it's better that way, says Mary," I can not imagine what a child would have had to endure with a dad who hung out as sex offenders. "

He and his wife Mary's life was destroyed when the neighbor girl accused John of having molested her sexually.
Even if they the day he would have molested here, was togheter all the day. They hired a private rented a private investigator who, among other things, documented that 15-year-old had gone with obvious untruths on several previous occasions. The girl did not Testify, neither explain the details of the alleged assault. John doesn't know her story of this "molesting" even today.

    - We watched it all as completely absurd
    .
The day when the assault would have happened had we spent together, John and me. And he at all would put himself in such a situation, I just can not imagine. We wrote off the accusation as a misguided revenge for John promised the girl's mother to kill the family's sick dog - the girl was there when the mother asked John, and she was noticeably upset by, "says Mary Devoy.

He was given an ultimatum by the prosecutor: if he had become to contest the allegation of the misconduct would be considered mild, and the penalty is limited to probation, and a place in the Sex harraser register. If, however, he chose to let the matter go to trial, he would risk a very severe sentence on conviction - to life.

My big mistake was that I chose the first option. Seen in retrospect, it seems wise not to agree to such a thing
    .
But I was shocked by the turn things took, I had minimal reflection and scared by the threat of going to prison, " he says.

    - Since we started working with rsole we have come in contact with several hair-raising event.
As a mother whose 15-year-old son had a sexual relationship with a 21-year-old woman - it is illegal sex with a minor, under the laws of Virginia. The mother learned of the relationship and asked his son to break.
Men han fortsatte, och det hela uppdagades.
But he went on, and it all came to light. Now the mother of sex crimes register for life, convicted of "protecting sex offenders". The verdict, she would have the police notified the 21-year-old woman soon after she learned of the relationship.

John and Mary Devoy criticism is supported by human rights organizations as Human Rights Watch. In a report titled "No easy answers" (No easy answers), strikes the organization stated that the registration is not reduced the number of sex crimes, and that it overlooks the fact that a large proportion of sexual abuse committed by perpetrators known to the children - even parents or relatives.

The report suggests that federal authorities abolishing the registration of teenagers, as well as of sex offenders who committed minor offenses.

But politicians seem to choose the opposite path. In November this year, the elections of governors in Virginia, and the victory tipped candidate, Republican Bob McDonnell, has gone to the polls to tighten sex crimes registration.
John Devoy and Mary is 45 and 38 years. They have been married for seventeen years.
"- We hoped the children understood that all young people who marry. But we have not received any."

"- Maybe it was the Lord who wanted it so. I can not think of what a child would have suffered with a father who is hung out to everyone as sex offenders, "says Mary Devoy.
She stares down into the living room carpet and trying to blink away the tears.
Myself, I was shocked by this article. I am not shocked by articles often. I did not know of this system, neither did I know how easy it was to make someone a sex harasser.

    Thoughts?

What's shocking? That a legal system can be manipulated by the hysteria of a single person? Or that our legal system thinks that having a sex offender registry is constitutionally appropriate?

Somehow, I doubt these sorts of cases are isolated to America, but *Thumbs Up* for making us all look like douchebags.
To be governed is to be watched, inspected, directed, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, and commanded, by creatures who have neither the right, wisdom, nor virtue to do so. To be governed is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, taxed, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, admonished, reformed, corrected, and punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be placed under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted, and robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, abused, disarmed, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, and betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, and dishonored. -Pierre-Joseph Proudhon

Both. I find both horrible and disgusting.

And I think its very isolated, for being a big part of the western world. And no, "It isn't only us" isn't a very good arugment.

Hey someone's got to do it....especially when our own journalists won't do it themselves.

Both are equally pathetic and a sickening miscarriage of justice.

Also "the other guy did it too" isn't a good defence.

Of course it doesn't mention him hiring a lawyer, so maybe he did do it.

I personally don't understand how the charges stuck when the girl had a previous history of making shite up and the man in question had a solid alibi.

Wouldn't it be a funny punchline to the article if he really DID molest her?

Yes it surely would. When we are discussing complete unrealistic fantasies, what if Bush would convert to Islam?

Because here in the U.S. we have Megan's Law which is an end around the constitution. Any conviction or plea to any sex offense forces you to register. Most people in most cases would just plea to a lower charge in most crimes rather than go through trial. With sex offenses the trials get exceptionally vicious and disturbing, so, most people are willing to accept lesser punishment. Unfortunately, Megan's Law attaches and they become pariah. You can check out the Megan's Law registry by doing a simple google search. While it includes rapists, it also includes old men who pinch their waitresses behinds.

Does it say what kind of offense they did, or do they only show their name?

Anyways, I think the real issue is the plea system because it makes people confess to crimes they didn't commit, that should never happen in a country that dares to call itself "Great".

People should understand that you can't lump the entire US together since each state has its own laws regarding this.

This thread should be titled "So this is the great State of Virginia?"

Yes, but most people ignore it. They just see "SEX OFFENDER!" and get paranoid/outraged at having these people nearby.

I'm not sure whether you are exaggerating applying hyperbole or are being genuine.

My favorite part was where they said him being on the list may be why the lord keeps them from having children.

Seriously, the sex crimes offender list can be messed up but that article rather weak.

He is quite accurate. Most people convicted of a crime never have a trial, they take a plea deal - they plead guilty to lesser crimes rather than risk a trial and get the book thrown at them.

Does it say what kind of offense they did, or do they only show their name?
It gives name and the crime that the person was convicted of. But that doesn't tell you much of anything. Sexual assault could range from raping a woman in a parking garage to pinching the waitress' behind. Indecent exposure could be a serial flasher hanging around a playground or a drunk that relieved himself in a dark alley.

As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

Serves him right for copying Rod Blagojevichs' hair-style.

Not sure what this has to do with the greatness of the USA.

Yeah what country are you from? I'm wondering so that I too can take an isolated case and use it to cast judgment on your entire system and society.
