Nope, not Verdun nor really on the Maginot Line, although it's quite close. The fortifications were constructed, because back then the town was situated next to the frontier with a grudge-holding duke. The church does indeed fly the municipal colours, but it's a bit of a trap. The flag is Holy Roman Empire's black eagle on the yellow background holding the town's coat of arms. I don't think they are recognisable in this particular picture.
Hint: A pretty large river flows nearby, but it's not the Rhine.

If it's a French town with a Holy Roman past it is most likely in the Franche Comté, since that was inherited by Emperor Maximilian I iure uxoris. The grudge holding duke might then be the Duke of Burgundy and the river may be the Rhone or Saône.

EDIT: I forgot, Holy Roman past may as well be Alsace or Lorraine, of course, but since the river is not the Rhine, I think that can be ruled out.

That means the Moselle is a "pretty large river"?

Toul is correct! The river is indeed Moselle, which I should have descriped as "rather", instead of "pretty", but it's still quite chubby, although not as long as his nearby colleagues. The grudge-holding duke was that of Lorraine, whose lands kept getting invaded by Louis XIV.

These are indeed the ruins of the abbey of Jumièges, pic taken by me when I visited it a few weeks ago. Quite a nice region to visit.

Wrong continent . To find it, you must figure out what kind of building it is.

A Caravanserai then, though that is close to a trade post.
