(Doubtless stupid) questions of a SPQR-novice
Dear forum,
After many months of gaining experience with several RTW-mods combined with annoying CTD´s and time-consuming re-starts of my respective campaigns I searched the TW-Center forums and read that SPQR is maybe the most stable RTW-conversion with almost no bugs or CTD´s.
Yesterday I installed SPQR 7.0 to my laptop as follows:
Because of the extreme security-policy of Windows VISTA regarding the “program-files”-folder I simply created a new folder (C/SPQR), installed my RTW (the 3-disc-version), installed the 1.3 patch (the German version), the 1.5 patch (the patches found the path to C/SPQR autonomous), the SPQR 7.0 full install, the SPQR 7.0 patch and finally the Graphic Fix.
I have tested SPQR for a few turns and now I have some questions:
1) Regarding the README: what means “manual install” and the deletion of the events.dat-file? Does this apply to my install?
2) When I start a new campaign, the advisor and the “show me how”-button appear without pressing ESCAPE and the “?” in order to start the Garrison/4tpy-Script. Is this correct? When I press the Escape/”?”-combination the advisor don´t speak about starting the script…
3) When I load a saved game I have to proceed with the Escape/”?” combination in order to start the script although the advisor gives no evidence that the script is activated ?
4) Then I have to press “Return to game” and fade out the advisor by pressing the “X”-button?
5) For instance, when I carry out a battle and the loading screen of the battle appears, my
display jumps over to my desktop for a short moment and then shows the loading screen again. This happens alike when the campaign map is loaded after a battle. Is this regular?
6) When I start a new campaign a display appears for a short moment concerning a “senate mission”, even before I´m able to activate the script. Is this regular?
7) When I move my cursor to extreme edge of my monitor then strange white symbols are flashing repeatedly. Is this normal?
Sorry for all these askings. But finally I wish to play through a fantastic game without problems all the time … since my spare-time is very limited with a little daughter and an uncomprehending wife J
Thank you for your answers,
Regards
Marcel

Re: (Doubtless stupid) questions of a SPQR-novice
Just one additional question:
Since SPQR had not created a desktop-icon I simply renamed the RTW-Icon into SPQR and started the game by double-clicking the renamed RTW-icon. Is this ok?

Re: (Doubtless stupid) questions of a SPQR-novice
1) Regarding the README: what means “manual install” and the deletion of the events.dat-file? Does this apply to my install?
erm, not really sure about this one, but i've never had to delete anything
2) When I start a new campaign, the advisor and the “show me how”-button appear without pressing ESCAPE and the “?” in order to start the Garrison/4tpy-Script. Is this correct? When I press the Escape/”?”-combination the advisor don´t speak about starting the script…
when you start a new game the scipt pops up in the corner automatically, you still need to click teh show me how. However when you load a game it doesn't pop up so you need to press escape then the show me how button followed by the x to get rid of the thing and then return to game in the options window
3) When I load a saved game I have to proceed with the Escape/”?” combination in order to start the script although the advisor gives no evidence that the script is activated ?
yes, but it doesn't really make it obvious that its activated
4) Then I have to press “Return to game” and fade out the advisor by pressing the “X”-button?
yes
5) For instance, when I carry out a battle and the loading screen of the battle appears, my
display jumps over to my desktop for a short moment and then shows the loading screen again. This happens alike when the campaign map is loaded after a battle. Is this regular?
this is more to do with your coputer than SPQR, have a fiddle with the desplay options and especially the resolution of the game (when i have a perticular resolution in game it happens to me, but works perfectly at other resolutions)
or alternatively left click on the desktop icon, select properties and then in the target line add the command -ne this will make the game windowed (it will still take up the whole screen) many people find that this improves performance, although you need to make sure that the in game resolution is the same as the desktop resolution
6) When I start a new campaign a display appears for a short moment concerning a “senate mission”, even before I´m able to activate the script. Is this regular?
this is left oer from vanilla, just ignore it
7) When I move my cursor to extreme edge of my monitor then strange white symbols are flashing repeatedly. Is this normal?
never heard of this before, try the windowed mode it may well solve it
Since SPQR had not created a desktop-icon I simply renamed the RTW-Icon into SPQR and started the game by double-clicking the renamed RTW-icon. Is this ok?
this is fine, it's how i did it
