I made a guide for EB on this topic (that has gone utterly ignored...), so I will just copy and paste it here.

It seams people are having trouble with this, so I thought I would clear it up. I bought the Alexander version of steam (since I forgot to get the real one) and figured this out a little while ago. Firstoff, download Troy, and install it into your C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\rome total war gold as you have probably have guessed. Now comes the harder part. Normally if you had a disk version of the game merely clicking on the Troy shortcut that is installed would work, but it targets itself at the RomeBI.exe directly, which wont work. So heres how to fix it. In Steam, make a desktop shortcut for RTW Gold BI vanilla. Right click this and click on properties. Under target it should say something like:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 4760
But yours may be different, dont use mine. Copy this. Now right click your TTW shortcut (or any, it doesnt really matter) and paste this over what is written in target. Leave a space and paste this:
-show_err -nm -mod:TTW
And you'll have something like:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 4760 -show_err -nm -mod:TTW
It should work. But I've only tried it with the Alexander expantion, so I'm not 100% sure.

Give it a shot.
can u tell me where to download rtw gold bi vanilla because every time I try to start the mod it says cannot find steam?
Excellent information.
Ah, I didn't put in the -nm part. That must have been the problem. I'll try that. Thanks!

Thanks! It worked! any recommendations from here to enhance the mod? submods maybe? where do I find those? Anyways Thank you
No submods, however Aristea is a full expansion and will be out in a few days. It will be 2374259700123754235872349 times better...

Is it still based on the illiad, or the trojan war period of the book and movie? thats what i'd like...
Also I just played the mod yesterday and its great. It puts you in the environment of the movie and book. Great job with campaign map, heroes, and music!!! I am wondering though, why does Hectors sword turn invisible when he fights and goes through his shield when he is standing?? Sorry, i'm disappointed because hes my favorite hero.
I just installed TTW to my main rome gold directory...I always get nervous with steam but I haven't seen any problems thus far with Troy. Everything is running smooth and looking fantastic (for rome!)
I eagerly followed this mod since the beginning...Although, now I'm playing it for the first time for some reason.
thanks for the work!
And is there any way you can make heroes separate (as in one man units) so that you can control them as they fight?
Aristea is more or less completely based on the Iliad and uses one man hero units. Yes, itsing awesome.
Wow its practically "the Dream Mod" that I see in my head. Any idea when its coming out?
