    Default OOTMM... challenging!

    Hey there everyone,

I pride myself in my ability to play Medieval Totar War and its various add-ons (eg. Stainless Still, Third Age, etc)... but I have to say that my current campaign playing the OOTMM is very challenging!

Firstly I'd like to thank the makers of the mod, as I believe they've done a great job on it.

I've never been in a situation before where I've several times had to accept becoming a Vassal to avoid being pummeled (Eriador has offered it a few times). I am finding that in particular the Silvan Elves are kicking my a*se.. their archers just cut through me way too quickly and the orc archers are just hopeless in return. The orcs really only have Warg Riders to try and counteract them, and whilst they are brilliant at charging (they can kill over 100 in one charge), in normal melee they are quite useless. And Trolls are just too hard to come by (recharge way too slowly).

Any suggestions on how survive a tad better in my current campaign? Eg. Best anti-elven strategy/units to use?!

From one goblin to the other I salute you.

Now you might call it cheating but there is a mod the Dea Paladins Additional Units Mod which adds light warg cavalry to OOtmm roosters.

Once you get Halberds defending will be a snap, what I do is coutnerattack I wait for a full stack of enemies to come to me and then when they sige us the halberds butcher them at the gates and any ladders or siege towers meet numbers that are unbreakable.

But yea that campaing is hard

Thanks for that Romaneck.. but when you say counterattack, do you mean sally out of the gates? If so, wont they just be standing there out in the field waiting to pick me off with arrows?

No I mean that they rarely let me to starve to death if I have reinforcements nearby

So they come with their siege equipment, ladders and towers and rams right?

So I put a heavy garrison squad of Goblin halberd on each of my border settlements and believe me when I say, behind walls a halberdier makes their worth rise over ten fold, 4 squads of halberdiers can hold a gate against at least 8 squads of whatever they are, their pikes give us the edge to make their numbers worthless at the gates.

So naturally when their stacks are diminished after the failed siege you set out in an epic counterattack to their nearest settlement.

This strat has given me 28 territories so, it should work for all Goblins

Siege defense - sally forth, 1 unit at a time of snaga skirmishers in wide spacing in a very long single line in front of their army, repeat until they are out of arrows, then demolish

Open field vs any elven army (actually any army at all except for heavy horse like rohan) - send your snaga's in first to absorb all the arrows, then use your good troops to deliver the deathblow. I used snaga's all the way to end game using this tactic - for ootm and Isengard they make brilliant fodder, lots of them and cheap to recruit. They actually score quite a few kills before they get demolished too in open field battles

Remember....."He who defends everything, defends....Nothing".... You have weight of numbers & DreadLords...put them to good use....

    Killer Stacks...

    1. multiple FM's in stacks...Dread up front.
    2. use fire, keep minimal archers, three or four.
    3. SPREAD formation....
    4. Close on them fast....
    5. Always hit the flanks
    6. KILL the enemy General quick-like.
    7. If your gonna lose the settlement , fine. Save your FM and make them pay for the settlement in Orc Blood...make them beat your hole full of javlins orcs.
    8. Use your javlins, their priceless ....and the Life's blood of the Orc.
Two or three "Killer Stacks" with resupply/fodder stacks will serve you best...

    Thanks Romaneck for clarifying!

Mega Tortas.. I might be suffering Monday-itis, but my I am finding it a bit confusing regarding what are DreadLords? And FM's?

Sorry Mate....DreadLords = Generals that use dread, not chivalry. Dread frightens the enemy generally causing easy routes when they charge.

    FM's = Family Members & Generals.

Thanks for clarifying.. I must admit you have risen two points that I have not considered.. Firstly using multiple Generals in a stack, mainly as I don't even have the income to support many family members at the moment. Secondly to use flame-arrows. I have skipped them currently as I found that Orc archers were inaccurate enough as it is, never mind turning on the flames.

One final hint that may help me, do you Occupy, Exterminate or Sack? I have always occupied to try and keep a good income coming in, but so far my army expense is too high.

Get a core empire then every other new settlement you take, exterminate it, destroy every building, and then sell it to an evil faction for some extra cash and move on - let them spend even more money re-developing it for 30-40 turns, then come back and do it again

    Things that work for me....
    1. Beginning game = Economy building...Core Kingdom + Rebels towns. Low tax rate when you can.
    2. Battles: Dreadwise....Generals with dread to break enemy morale. Fire arrows to BREAK enemy morale.
    3. Battles: Stacked Family Members/Generals that hits flanks..weak spots at crucial moments. Always keep two - three units reserve for the crucial hit.
    4. Keep an eye on your cities and Castles. For the most part try and hold them with "Free" units. If your paying for units they need to be fighting.

    Yes...Underworld II...to be precise....

OT: At turn # 23 the Goblins own the forests of Fangorn and the two Elvin provinces next to Moria. I'm trade partners with the Riddemark and their titanic struggle with Saruman has not begun. I wonder if they will maintain the peace with the Goblins and have us profit by aiding them against The fowl Orcs from Isengaurd....

P.S. Treebeard = kindling wood for the fire....Burn baby burn.....Remember....The One Ring belongs to Moria..."We have the precious"
