Why am I losing military points ?
    Really, I don't get it :p

I won all the battles, except 2 (stupid mistakes, sent small army against very good rebels...).
I have only ONE fortress. But I also have one Trumarch (outside my family tree) and one Strategos (family member).

If I'm not wrong, I should lose 1 point every turn for the fortress, and EARN two points for the Trumarch, no ?
If I read well, general who are family members don't bring military points, right ?

If someone can check this and explain me -_-
I did my best but...I don't get it...

    Thanks a lot.

PS : Normally the version is DLV 6.1, with all scripts activated. (I installed 6.1 over a 6.0 + hotfix install, I checked and it looked ok, hope it does not create problems...I started a new game with this 6.1 install anyway)

you earn 1 point for each banner. There are 3 banners for european/orthodox factions, 1 for greek/muslim factions ą general.

There are some things like trespassing(righ?) which reduce points, idk really have a clue about some of them tho.

I would check it, but I don't got DLV right now.
Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

I think maybe your general has to be in the fortress in order for you to get the bonus for his rank.

I also think I saw Repman saying somewhere that he would change this for 6.2 but I can't remember for certain.

Wow, errr, is there a way for me to be sure about that...I mean, I only have crappy infantery because I lack military points, so I would need a solution...-_-'

EDIT : OK I found a post about it, Repamn said Generals have to be in city/castle to earn the points.
SO for a general, what do you suggest ? To get a high rank, I have to be OUTSIDE, I mean fighting an ennemy or inside a fort, etc...
So, basically, I let them "work" for fourty years in the wild or in a fort, then retire them to a castle and i'll get my points ? O_o

I get military points if the general is in a city ? Or only if general is in a castle ?

Often what I do is to consistantly make the king's second son a general. He goes out and kicks ass as soon as the first son can't easily get any more authority that way. So typically my warring is focused on the character I want to develop. Once the first son is experienced enough, I focus on the second son until the first son's child is ready to play general. Hopefully my king is still alive by this time, because if he is then I can get his grandchild ranked as a general before he becomes heir.

So ideally I wind up with a king who is also a top ranked general.

Either way all the fighting going on ensures my mil points are constantly going up, but most importantly I'd only build a fortress if I was confident that I could sustain my mil point growth.

Sometimes I quite like being reasonable with my neighbours and just maintaining my small faction, which makes mil points very difficult to gain. In these games I won't even consider building a fortress until mil points are maxed. If I felt it appropriate to take my opponents fortress/citadel in order to reduce their production capability, I'd strip it and give it back immediately.

Basically there is no situation I can think of where I will put up with having my most precious general play house in a settlement. It takes away the point of building him up to then lock him away.

I already have more than half my family stuck in the citys and towns, just to make ends meet. The side effect is that gov points are maxed extremely fast since it seems governers only need to consistantly end their turn in the same settlement to get top rank.

My latest game as england I think I maxed both well before 1219. Which is really quite relaxing, I don't have to care about losing mil point or gov point income if a character dies. But I would really like to see the system expanded upon...

Anyway, that's probably too much info already

edit: Where I said it was relaxing I was kinda wrong... if you max mil and gov points too fast the AI will be able to advance faster than you. When the tech is unlocked for you, you also unlock it for the AI. I'm trying to maintain a nice peaceful england but I'm noticing stormclouds on the horizon as I think some other factions already have a citadel(s)... which is somewhat better than my single fortress...

    Thanks for the info.
I needed my fortress or it meant losing -_-' (needed heavy cav, really !)
Only the king and heir do not earn military points when they are good generals, right ?

That's right, unless you do as I outline in the first paragrah of my previous post.

The heir can be a general before he becomes heir and he will retain his rank after becoming heir, and then king.

That is the way to make your king also a ranked general.

If you don't have the opportunity then kings are best as governers, for me.

But if you do then that's a lot of +morale your king is packing...

    OK thanks .
I've started using a few of my oung family members as general.
Well, not using yet...Now they're in Adana, fortress and capital of Armenia, with the King, for their training

I'll need 4-5 good generals to fight the mighty Egypt which is about to finish Jerusalem and become my new neighbours...(they have been my neighbours for a while, I pushed them back and gave the provinces to Jerusalem, but they're back -_-')

Theses 4-5 generals will be based in a castle as often as possible when they will have a high rank, in order to earn military points and try to get access to better infantery. For now my cavalary is doing well, but I'm not sure it will always be enough...

Be wary of making any general surpass your proper/desired heir in authority. Sometimes my second son general approach can cause a civil war...

    Ah interesting point :
_ How the heir is chosen ?
_ How do you improve one's authority ?
Still so much to learn about this game it seems -_-'

Dunno but authority can affect it. As far as I'm aware it's no different from vanilla, just more important given the gameplay/detail DLV offers.

Again same as vanilla, check export_descr_character_traits.txt if you want to know without playing to find out... personally it would have taken a lot of enjoyment out of the game if someone had told me or if I had checked that file. So I won't tell you and I don't recommend cheating by looking at the files (at least not until you're so desperate that the game is not fun anymore... so probably never)

Personally I'd just think about what might earn authority and then give it a shot, see what happens. This actually playing the game is something I really enjoy, being told the answer would be about as helpful as being read the last page of a book, when I'm half way through reading it.

But then again some people don't want to get much out of a game, because if they did it would take too much of their time. Some fun is not worth having
