Default Jerusalem - free garrison slots

I'm having great fun with Stainless Steel 6.1 and have been working through the factions on vH/vH. This is challenging at times, but not impossible.

I have just got to playing the Kingdom of Jerusalem and have got bogged down. OK, having six full stacks of Jihad armies on your doorstep is a bit of a grind - made worse that they usually get in via a spy opening gates.

It has only just dawned on me that the challenge has been made worse by the fact that none of my cities is giving me any free upkeep units. I guess that this is costing me some 3500 a month. That summed up over some 25 turns to date as I have captured cities means that I don't have enough military muscle to do quick city captures - I am always on the defensive.

Is this a bug or have a failed to meet some condition for free upkeep - e.g. % population converted to your faith?

Just a tip, keep a good spy inside of Jerusalem and he will be able to help you kick out the Islamic spies from your city.

Cities only give free upkeep to units that can be trained localy with the existing buildings.
My guess would be that you have either none available that have also the free upkeep trait or the building(s) that train/provide free upkeep are damaged.
If you have local trained units in your town with free upkeep trait and still no free upkeep your building file might be non-standard/changed.

If a faction conquer a city via Crusade/Jihad the remaining troops of the victorious army may keep free upkeep in the conquered settlement for give some hope of keep the setlement in the middle of enemies at least for some time.

Thanks folks! I will use to spy to stop my gates being opened.

I think that I might have a clue as to what is going on. I have just started a Templar campaign in 'Early Era' and have run into the same problem again - but with a slight variant. My Templar Sergeants are not free upkeep, but my crossbow militia are - but both are recruited in the same town. I suspect that the Templar soldiery, perhaps by being 'specialist' units, are exempted from being 'free upkeep'. Again, this will make gameplay very difficult!

In generel terms, militias will be free upkeep, in towns, while professional soldiers are not.
If you wish to make some units Free Upkeep, open up the Export_descr_unit.txt and look for the unit you want to edit.
Next to the Attributes line, you'll find various options, like 'sea_faring', 'hardy', 'start_skirmishing' and so on.
At the end of that line, you can add 'free_upkeep_unit'. Make sure each attribute is seperated by a comma!
The unit will then be Free Upkeep in towns that can recruit said unit.

Ofcourse, always backup any file before you start editing, as a wrong entry could cause the game to crash.

Thanks for the guidance on how to make a unit free upkeep! Will give this a try.

It is a shame that Jerusalem has no units that already have the free upkeep attribute.
