You really are screwed if you have alot of Citedals and Huge cities. How developed are the income buildings(ports, markets, synagoge), merchants(how much), economy events(deppression or booming), Governors(chiv., piety, degree's, retinue, age).
Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

The ratio of citys to castles is important, cities are needed to support castles.

Don't upgrade settlements until you can afford it.

Don't take high level castles like citadels until you can afford it (and your military points are maxed or you have enough ranked generals to compensate, in the case of a citadel or fortress).

I say, mark your most un desierd Citedals/fortess'/castle's. Sell every building in them and give it to the Pope or something.

I would give them to someone I intend to attack, so I can take them back later no probs. I'd also let them keep the buildings because I might want the settlement back before the AI can fully rebuild and I'm not scared of high tier AI units

hm right now the usa and many other western countries are cheating by printing money. the result will be hyperinflation.
maybe thats the case we have here?

yeah without the ability to demolish/build settlement you kinda are stuck with castles/fortress/citadel which would force the above situation. Not fun to sell to pope and there seems to be no 4-1 ratio on the map (at least in the area im playing KoJ)

There is solid info in the SGFNP on settlement costs and how to deal with them including how to maximize income from your settlements and when (and when not to) upgrade your settlements.
