We're looking to move to a new system of providing updates which we think will lead to a quicker turn around time and faster incorporation of changes.
The system is called Subversion and is based around the idea of the team maintaining and updating an online repository of the mod files. Basically we upload stuff to a file server, which maintains all the files in their proper structure, and everyone else then downloads them.
For the developers it means less messing around making sure that the updates reflect the correct file structure, and ensures that we are all working on the correct files.
For the testers and team, it means that you can access files the moment they've been changed. There won't be any questions of which update you use, all you need to do is:
1) Download and install the subversion filemanager (called "Tortoise")
2) Download the files from the repository (this will take some time as it's basically downloading the whole mod - sorry, but we think the advantages will be worth it)
3) Every day hit the update and the subversion file manager will update your installation with all the latest stuff.
It'll take me a while to finish uploading the files, and I'll need to do some testing to make sure that they've got there OK, but the system should run a lot smoother.
Once it's ready to roll I'll let you know.
Here are the instructions - read carefully to make sure you understand!!!
STAGE 1
1) You need a clean copy of RTW patched to 1.5 (copy and paste the whole RTW folder from your vanilla installation and rename it something like RS2 Beta). If you are using VISTA make sure to put your new copy somewhere different from C:/Program Files (e.g. C:RS2 BETA)
2) Leave the /custom, /preferences, /replays and /saves folders in place (if they're there - I think the computer generates one of two of those the first time you play) and leave RomeTW.exe, RomeTW-BI.exe, mss32.dll (and gamespy.ico, icon.ico, GameSpy Arcade if you have them)
3) From the /data folder delete all the files and folders apart from the /packs and /sounds folders and their contents
4) From /data/packs folder delete ui_1.pak
5) From /data/sounds folder delete events.dat (if it's there)
6) Now open the /BI/data/menu folder and delete Rome.Int
7) Open /BI/data/text folder and delete export_advice.txt
8) Open /BI/data/world/maps/campaign/barbarian_invasion and delete descr_strat.txt
9) If you have Alex installed, there's no changes needed there.
10) Remove the Miles folder if you have it
STAGE 2
Download and install Tortoise SVN (make sure you download the correct version, 32bit unless you know you have a 64bit processor)
http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads
STAGE 3:
Submit your e-mail address to me to pass onto House of Ham (manages the web server)
STAGE 4:
Once you get your user name and password e-mailed to you by House of Ham, you open windows explorer, right click in your new RS2 directory and select:
SVN Checkout
This will bring up a new window which asks for the URL
Copy or type in this:
http://rometotalrealism.dreamhosters.com/rs2/trunk
It'll then require a directory to install in
Select the folder you've got all set up (the root folder, not data - mine is called RS2 Beta in this example but yours will probably be different) - you'll need to remove the /rs2 from the end of the link that the Tortoise SVN client has autofilled in.....
needs to become:
It'll then ask for your user name and password. Enter these.
You can then relax while it installs the mod into the correct folders - for me this took just under 2 hours on 8MB broadband...it's just possible it might pause with an error message and need to be continued, i.e. right click --> SVN Checkout (HoH tells me they have limits installed on the server to avoid problems)
At the end of this you should see icons over each folder of the mod. These should be green ticks. The grey stop signs are folders and files I told the program to ignore when I was creating the repository. Those are ones that I told you to keep (ignore the .bat files).
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The mod should be playable now.
To play it - double click on the "Roma Surrectum II.exe" icon in the launcher folder (you could make a desktop shortcut to this if you want)
At the bottom right you'll see that you can add command line extensions.
Generally you'll want it to read (the same for all RTW engines):
-show_err -nm -movie_cam
-show_err = shows errors
-nm = disable the opening movies (not relevant to RS2)
-movie_cam (allows use of movie cam on battle replays - custom battles only)
Make your selections - if you choose any named faction (not "other factions") you'll need to select the Provincial Campaign not the Imperial Campaign
Enjoy!
STAGE 5:
Every day I would suggest right clicking inside your main RS2 folder and selecting SVN Update - this will download any new updates onto your system.
I or more likely DVK will post a warning here if anything requires a campaign restart.
