oh, i see, the islands are tinyso its hard to click them. thanks for the help
Okay, this colony range business, how does it work exactly? I spent ages to get to the national idea (they changed everything on me in EU3 Complete! heehee) and now here I am in 1450 and I cannot colonize the Cape of Africa. I understand that to increase my range, I must improve my navy tech but how much do I need to improve it before I can actually create colonies? (I'm playing as France).
Thank you kindly in advance!

Islands like Cape Verde, Sao Tome, Fernando Po and St Helena are the key to colonizing Africa. First of all I recommend setting the number of colonists to like 400 cuz 100 is retarded, its takes like 30+ years for the colonies to hit 1k at 100 per colonist. Then you just need to wait for the island to become a core province and I think it should extend the range, colonial range is somehow calculated from your core province closest to the desired area of colonization. Also the island colonies allow you to repair your ships in the area and replenish troops to fight off natives. I've been playing as Portugal alot and the African Islands are key to my African coastal colonies.

Ah, I am sorry but I haven't any idea what you're on about Hounf of Culan. I am not sure why 100 is any more retarded than 400. Besides, I do believe that 5 colonists is enough of a pool to have for starting colonies.
I'm more concerned with the colonial range and how that is calculated. From what I gather I have "200" right now, playing as France. I'm not sure what measurement this refers to, does anyone happen to know?

Basically you have to turn closer colonies into cores (takes about 50 years) before you can colonize further.
I couldn't exactly remember so I looked it up. Some advisers can increase your range too, hire them.

Setting the colonist size to 100 sucks cuz it takes that much longer to reach a 1000 man settlement starting from 100 men, which is key for permanent colonies, 400 gives you a head start on reaching 1000. As for colonial range, investing in Navy increases the range per level, plus advisers can help it

No prob.
Oh, also, the naval distances thing doesn't apply when it comes to inland provinces. All you need is a fully colonized province to border one of those. Doesn't need to be a core. I don't think, however, that if you have a fully colonized province bordering an uncolonized coastal province, that you'll be able to colonize it. You need to have it within distance. Kind of annoying.
It is much much cheaper to work one province at a time, sending colonist after colonist. Province reaches 1000 faster. If you're going for controlling vast swathes of land, you really ought to invest in trade. I think every province will cost you, annually, something like 20 ducats.
All in all it's still good to get as many of the colonist/year ideas, and probably land of opportunity as well. Since it raises your colony growth (in the ones below 1000), that means you can reduce colony maintenance by around 25% and still have them growing at a rate of 50 per year (before any other factors like natives and inhospitable climates).

GO GERMANY WORLD CUP FIFA 2010!!!!
It's in options when you pick a nation to start the campaign, but again it has to be done when you start. Can't do it in the middle of a campaign
Thanks, this game is surprisingly fun, and feel extremely fresh and exciting after playing Empire
