LOTR and Viking InvasionII are excellent mods. I have dabbled in both and they are just top notch.

LOTR-TW is idd my favorite Lotr mod for RTW .. Haven't tried VI2 yet , perhaps i should , it has very good critics..
If you have Med2 , i could recommend TATW .. Although the only difference between TATW and Lotr-TW is diplomacy (which is better in TATW ofcourse) ..
And LOTR-TW is more movie-based , TATW lies between lore and movie![]()
Spqr, EB and Paeninsula Italica are just some of my favorites.

Paeninsula italica is a very nice mod.

Well I looked at the mods and I think I will get SPQR, EB and RTR just to try out. Didn't like the look at the Italian one... Sure I had SPQR before but it's changed so much!
THanks for the recommendations

XGM and Viking Invasion II!
Never liked XGM mod but I will have a look at the Viking Mod

Well... I have to say that I hate RTR... maybe with a vengeance? I don't know... It feels trapped and linear... Like everything is heading in one direction which, on the whole, isn't that much fun anyway. The battles were a bit stupid too. The minutes anyone made any sort of contact everyone would route. Really annoying.
I like EB, especially since my HL2 driver update smoothed out RTW for me EB doesn't lag and it only takes me 20 seconds to load the next turnthe campaign is good, though maybe a little overcomplicated. Battles... Well, there is no word for the battles. Get the permission for exe editing to scale up the unit size and I think EB would be like looking through a window at the real battle going on. It just feels so real!
SPQR, pretty much the same as I remember it. The only thing that seems to have changed is that units route faster. At least they do on VH/VH settings. But the AI is brilliant everywhere. I don't know how the did it. There was a big strategy war before two of my armies and two of the enemy for about 2 years. They tried to get into a good position, but at the same time they tried to catch me out while I wasn't in a good position. Just like Gaul waited for ages until I moved my north legion out of range, then BOOM, they slaughtered 2 of my garrisons. And in battle... God I don't know. A head on crash, two legions V two Large armies. About 12000 men fighting. Everyone held formation and when I opened up a small gap in the enemies flank, no, the AI didn't send everyone into the battle straight out, they had reserves and both AI armies fought over the gap until my cavalry broke the right flank and the gap fell back onto the enemy, forming them into one big block. The last reserves went onto the right flank but it was two late.
And that viking thing... I never got to try it.
Basically like I said before, the RS2 battles need to be hard to kill, but possible to route. The way I see it RS1.5 has the best gamers gameplay, historical second only to EB and battles/AI second only to SPQR.
But this is all gonna change with RS2 right? You WILL be best of everything until EB2 takes over historical... But even then, a historical mod vs the best gameplay, AI, Battles, and second best historical... It's not really much comp.
I have faith in RS2![]()

Try RTR VII TIC. The Carthage campaign is scripted in that there are certain objectives to take. I doubt that you will find the first battle stupid. The alternate is the Celtiberian campaign which is free format.
As others have posted there are some enjoyable RTW based mods out there

Arthurian Total War

Arthurian TW, is action packed and with the religion thing it makes the subduing of settlements slow.
Troy TW was another one where the fighting is very different to Rome. and if you play as one of the Greek factions there is a lot of backstabbing early on.
The Forth Age : shadows of Men ( i think) is a Tolkien inspired Mod: and a lot of fun.
TE is a mod i played a lot before i discoverd RS and enjoyed immensely
there are others but i have removed them from my hard drive due to space issues.

Res Gestae - it has a "unique" map stretching to India, and there's an Indian faction too. I remember I played a fine, enjoyable campaign with Parthia (however I didn't finish it). There are some scripts also, like recruting a full legion in 1 turn. Surely it is worth of trying it, as well as the rest of the mods mentioned above.
I'm sittin' here completely surrounded by no beer.
I looked at Res Gestae earlier today, but it looked old, 2007 i think and theres been almost no activity on their thread for quite a while, which means the quality wont be upto RS 1.5c standards surely :]

But still in my opinion it is worth of trying, just because of India (I like the eastern parts of the ancient world, you know)

The only other mod I have installed at the minute is Invasio Barbarorum Ruina Roma, just because it gives a refreshing change due to the vast difference in the time period due to it including both East and West Roman Empires, which makes it fun - atm I'm in a huge civil war and im loving every moment of it.

I tried res gestae a while back. I could never get the legion script to work... I'm actually not sure why I stopped playing though. I totally forget.

I just tried that viking thing and it's pretty cool. The only thing that I see really wrong with it is that the AI never use the shield wall formation. Which is kind of a game breaker as I only downloaded the mod for when I dad comes round, coz he's an absolute fanatic on dark age Britain. He will not be amused with the lack of shield walls :3
