Icon5 I need a Windows XP compatible program to open Startpos.esf.

I would like to modify the startpos of the major player nations, specifically altering the goal requirements for the various campaign games. I need a specific program to open the startpos.esf, I cannot use the one a modder created here. It supposedly uses .NET fix 3.5 which I cannot install on my system. I have tried his most recent update, it simply does not work.

There must be some standard program that can be used. Notebook worked on the LUA files, but it is garbage when used on the ESF. Anyone have an answer??

    Thanks

I too have have XP and I too had to upgrade to .NET 3.5. My upgrade to .NET went OK and the ESF editor works just fine for me. The issue would seem to be with your XP setup. For example, have you got Service Pack 3 installed?

No the latest version I have is 2.0. I tried going to the .NET fix site, downloading the complete pack not just the bootstrap version, but it always says there is an (unidentified) error installing, and the installation fails. I even tried downloading 3.0, that installation failed also.

EsfEditor requires .NET 2.0. File Pack Manager and Mod Manager requires 3.5.

Well, then this is even more confusing. I HAVE 2.0 but every time I download and try to use the ESFEDITOR it says here is an error and it wont work. Furthermore, when I try to open the esf file, windows does not show the esfeditor listed in my programs available for use to open with.

Weird.. You mean that you've never be able to run it, not even once?

Furthermore, when I try to open the esf file, windows does not show the esfeditor listed in my programs available for use to open with.
Thats normal because it does not need installation to run it so windows ignore its existence. By the way you have to have all the 3 files of the editor in the same folder to run it (EsfEditor.exe, EsfEditor.exe.config, NodesDescriptions). First you'll open the editor and then from File/Open etc. you'll open an *.esf file.

Are you using v1.4.3 of the Esf editor?

Hey, I appreciate the help, but I discovered what the problem was. I hadn't allowed my computer to update. I did the update, it uploaded all the new .NET fix programs, and when I downloaded the ESF Editor it worked. Thanks for the help though. Much appreciated.
