    Default Just another question

I headed over to the YouTube video with Brad Pitt's conversation with Bill Maher and checked out the comments. And what I noticed from one side of the arguement that there was a lot of the following.

Many seem to believe that Christians recoil in fear when presented with science.....well that's pretty much it since science covers such a large amount of things.

    Why is this?

I believe you answered your own question.

Science covers a lot of things (no really?) and some or many of those "things" seem to contradict certain sections of the Bible or perceptions on Christian dogma, which can be confronting to some Christians. It's this minority reaction that stereotypes the rest in the eyes of others.

And well... it's a stereotype. There's really nothing else to explain beyond that. I'm sure all communists aren't baby eating Stalin worshippers, or that all Jews are cheap with money, or that all scientologists are crazy nutjobs. But that's the ill informed for you. It's not something exclusive to Christianity.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a busy day of witch hunting and pedophilia ahead of me.

I went to Catholic school damn near my whole life and they always taught science as something separate of religion. Science doesn't necessarily have to discredit religion, unless you start talking about taking the whole 7 days and Adam and Eve and Noahs Ark literally rather than metaphorical stories, which is pretty much how Catholicism (at least where I went to school) took most of the Old Testament.

Granted I'm nihilistic/agnostic these days and most Christians will say Catholics barely qualify as a devout group of christian people, so *shrug*. To hell with you Elitists anyways!

Science is the process of searching for natural explanations for natural events.
Religion, by its nature, is a process of supernatural explanations (often for natural events).

So you have the perceived conflict right there. Christians (as well as just about every other religion), have to believe in many things that are not 'natural'. Virgin births, miracles, and at least a resurrection. The moment you seek natural explanations for these events, you find them.
So personally, I completely understand why they perceive science as a threat to that kind of mindset. It is.

    Decu Trash,

Perhaps it's because their so-called faith does not rise to the challenge of completely believing in God. Science should be no barrier to the Christian, indeed if he or she were of that, then they would know that God made science and not the other way round, and by that, that science being greater than God can thus disprove Him, but the very opposite.

Perhaps it's because they are not completely blind to the fact that their beliefs might be complete bs. They are not idiots, like the blindly religious folk. They doubt, but they deny their doubt.Blindly religious people accept stupid as fact without doubting it. The difference between a doubting christian and a christian without doubt is that the dude without doubt is a moron.

It's not spiritual enlightement to not doubt and start thinking within restrictions, it's spiritual stagnation and idiocy.
