Default This is supposed to make sense?

This is my first game of SS. Playing French. Turn 84, I am ranked number one overall, and am in top five consistently in all other rankings, except money. Money of course fluctuates greatly.

I own all of France, plus all the border regions with HRE. I own half of England. I own most of Egypt, including Jeruselm. I have called for and completed two successful crusades (despite scurvy) and am on my third.

The last two popes were French, and I never have fewer than six Cardinals. My merchants trade nothing less than three figure items.

I have marriages with three thrones. I cannot think of any area of the game where I do not whoopass.

Yet I cannot recruit seargent spearmen, let alone armored seargents. Not only that, I cannot retrain anything above simple spear. No cav can be recruited or retrained. Can you imagine? The French without Cav? And when bandits are generated between France and my HRE borders, I have to face Lt Swords, Armoured Sgts, Sgt Spear, and Chiv Knights!!!

How is this supposed to make historical sense? Every AI army I face has better units than I have, even with me buying all mercs available.

I continue to prevail over these AI armies having superior troops by using superior numbers, but it is just not realistic. I was so excited when I first began to play this module; I thought it would be more historically accurate. What a disapointment! Bandits with Chiv Cav indeed. Humph!

Can someone explain why every army gets better troops than I do? Better yet, can someone explain why this game is better than vanila? At least in vanila, bandits don't have far superior units than what the number one power can recruit.

You have installed either RealRecruitment or Byg's Grim Reality submods or both. The 6.1 installer provided information links to the said submods that detail the changes to recruitment that these submods make that you should have read before selecting them. Check their threads in the submods forum for details. And if you did install Grim Reality, there is a patch you need to install at the bottom of the first post in the BGR thread.
