Broadsides

I recently read Sharpe's Trafalgar and, although I can't remember the exact wording, one of the characters says something to the general affect that, in a broadside, if all the cannon fire at once, the ship would sustain massive damage and thus the guns are fired in a ripple. Assuming this is so, would it be possible to edit the manual broadsides so they would themselves fire in a ripple, as is done with fire-at-will when ships pass each other?
