    Default Sub-kingdoms... A good idea?

Right now I have Syracuse as a subkingdom. A separate government but still part of the Roman empire. Before I broke my last save I had the Greek states of Athens and Rhodes, Iberia and the last city of Carthage totally boxed in with my empire on all four sides and their cities with their own governments, but still part of the empire.

Is it a good idea to allow client kingdoms to rule happily? I mean... I've never gotten into war with a defeated client kingdom, but still...

You mean the protectorates, right? If so, then yes, it might be a good idea but only to some poiint, I mean, if you client kingdom has only 1-2 regions left, not more. Otherwise, sooner or later, be sure to be backstabbed. The win conditions matter a lot, I guess, and the regions the faction need to control to win.

Indeed it does. Win condition more or less controls the AI's mind.

Why not crush them instead? What bonuses come from protectorates?

Totally, plus you can later simulate how the real small nations that were separate factions slowly merged into Rome.

and they can be good border protection....sometimes they need a little cash boost from you, but they get the job done if an invasion force is at your door

Aye that is a good point, demonstrated by my Greek government when the southern shores of the Empire came under attack by persians. It was a bit like the spartans, but in Athens. The Greek 4 stack army took on the entire 12 stack army of the Parthian hoard and I didn't even have to spare a cohort in the fighting

You,ve... been... atacked... by 12... stacks of Parthians?? Even though you didn't have to fight them, wow, I've never really had a chance to face them in my campaigns. I guess you was happy to have such a good cannon fodder, ehm, I mean protectorate, of course

Well it wasn't the largest war I've had to face. In the war against Macedonia in that campaign I had 13 stacks against Macedonia's 20 stacks. It was sort of a draw in the end. Though I did gain a large section of Macedonian territory I couldn't continue and had to sign a peace treaty.

But ya, the Greeks fought well. If I remember right 5 stacks of Persians took the boats home and 3 stacks of Greeks remained to clean up the mess that was fleeing up towards Constantine on the road around the sea.

I mean, I've never fought any war with the Parthians, which is kinda my dream, to face them with my legionaries. Surely, I've been through worse than 12 stacks, but never against Parthia :/ (they are being destroyed everytime).
