    Default Request: DETAILED Skinning Tutorial

    Hi there,

So why am I requesting a detailed tutorial on skinning?

Well, I'm quite n advanced modeler now and already reated some nice models. But although I've been trying for months, my skinning tries never got above the level of a child from an elementary school playing around with some old color pencils.

My hope is that someone (sumskillz, MADTAO, Yelü Dashi, danova, one from Rusichi, the-guy-from-the-Magyar-mod-whose-name-I-currently-can't-remember, Kingkong, Disgruntled Goat etc) might write a detailed tutorial about skinning. Starting by the basics like searching references/painting concept art, the basic skinning and the refining of the model, with detailed screens and explanations on how they did what.

I know this is a mammoth task, bu I'd be glad if someone would take chare of this, it would make my life and those of many others far simplier.

    Cheers and tanks,

    Nevada

This should teach you the basics of texture creation, REAL texture creation. Not copy and pasting google images into a texture and thinking your hot .

    Woah, more than nice.

Now that this is settled, the next matter is slwly coming into my mind:

    normal maps.

Icedie made once a tutorial on normal maps, but it covers only normal maps of metal.
Tuts including methods for other materials, such as textiles or faceswould be nice.

Are you sure this isn't just about the alpha channel on the normal map?

I use both Crazybump and the Photshop Nvidia plugin for normal maps, but sometimes it's better to draw them because the programs don't always automatically know what you're trying to achieve. Try Crazybump, it's really versatile and free for the first month.

This is cool. I wasn't aware of the warp feature in Photoshop. It looks very useful.

Though, on occasion I think it is helpful to use a google image (like for a shield boss for example), but I never think I'm hot for doing so.

Theoretically you can do all this with paint. Practically every (more or less) sofisticated texture isn´t doable by Gimp, like that chainmail - no way around Photoshop.
Although Gimp has a nice little function namly the bump map filter which Photoshop lacks of.

Sure it's doable with GIMP You could just copy that image of the chainmail , and then use that .. Afaik , GIMP is very good , has less features than PS and all , but i mean , Photoshop is like 700 bucks and GIMP is free .. I know what i'd (and what i have chosen) choose
