Byzantium's heyday is over, and the once proud nation is now a shadow of her former self. the only lands under the Empire's control are Constantinople, Nicaea, Corinth, and Thessalonica which along with the Isle of Cyprus, is virtually nothing in these turbulent times. The Empire may still be the center of the world, but she is now a pathetic imitation of her former glory.
However, all is not lost. The noble Emperor Alexius wishes to restore the Empires standing in Europe, and decides that 1080 is the time for this new expansion to start.
Within Byzantium, the largest construction project in the nation's history begins. The first priority is establishing transportation, and by extension trade. Next move will be in agriculture, and setting up trading ports, as well as markets. After this will come military fortification, and finally improvement in healthcare and civilian administration will take place.
Alexius also decides to send his daughter, Anna Comnenus, for Sicily to win the nation's allegiance.
Meanwhile, his son, Prince John, sets off on a march for Smyrna, a nearby rebel settlement, with an army and orders that no rebel soldier be left alive...
