I don't know that he is an atheist, but there is no doubt in my mind he is willing to trade on a false impression of being a religious person. His involvment with Trinity Church and Rev. Wright was for cynical gain. Rev Wright was a well connected and power player in Chicago and it did him a world of good to be associated with him while in Chicago. When Wright became a liability he threw him under the bus.

I would have done the same.

Actually he joined the baptist church in Chicago to appeal to the large black community there, because of critics saying he wasn't "black enough" to represent the south-side chicago district (the republicans even chose a "blacker" man to oppose him). Black Baptist churches are usually bastions of support for the left, evengelical protestant churches are where neocon support comes from. The standard denomonations (Catholic, Lutheran etc) are usually neutral.

Honestly, who cares, men are irrational enough to partition their sanity and be effective leaders. This is proven.
