    Default The Original 13th Ammendments

So I was reading "The Civil War: A Narrative" by Shelby Foote the other day, and came across the fact that there was a 13th Amendment that never went into effect. Called the Corwin Amendment, it was passed by Congress in 1861 but never ratified by the states due to the Civil War. It would have prevented the Federal government from interfering in the domestic institutions of the individual states, including slavery.

Did some more research and found that there is another "missing" 13th Amendment, from the early 1800's.

Here are the various online sources that I have found so far after a brief search, and am open to any more that others may find.

The Corwin Amendment is one that strikes me the most....if the South had not seceded, they could have very well helped pass an Amendment that would have protected their institution of slavery....talk about irony.

    Discuss.

It would have only been a short term fix as the south realized. The growth of the slave states was outstripping the slave states even with their inflated political clout based on the 3/5 clause.

But if the cause be not good, the king himself hath a heavy reckoning to make, when all those legs and arms and heads, chopped off in battle, shall join together at the latter day and cry all 'We died at such a place; some swearing, some crying for surgeon, some upon their wives left poor behind them, some upon the debts they owe, some upon their children rawly left.
