Default Overclocking Laptop... to Pent Up rage and others

    Hey Pent uP Rage,

Just a few questions to ask you. I have a laptop and i want to OC it. Wonder if i can OC it and if u can show me how.
Here is the specs of my laptop.

    DELL Inspiron 9300
    Intel Centrino 1.86 GHz
    Geforce go 6800
    768 MB RAM (DDR2 PC2-4200)

...dont know much about harddrive and the rest....

    Another question.
I currently have a Dell 256 MB momery chip running together with the 512 MB Crucial memory chip....would there be a problem running 2 different manufactured chip together?....Im thinking about getting a 1 GIG memory stick of a different manufacturer and run it with the 512 MB crucial......should i do that or should i just let the 1 GIG runs by itself?

    well...

if you would like to communicate with PuR only...
then just send him a private message...

however I have just read your post, and it is possible that other forum members can give you advice as well.
Also the advice given can be useful to others. Thats's why I will keep this thread open and I'll edit the title.

remember next time to use the private message option..
for communicating with one person only..
in case of requesting general help.. you could use a topic..without specifying from whom you are requesting help from

    Either way...
Wish you luck and hopefully you can work the OC out..

most RAM works together, just stick both gig and 512mb sticks in at the same time, it'll be fine.

as a general rule with laptops, OCing isn't such a good idea. cooling is already an issue with laptops, and to strain the cooling any further isn't a very good idea.
However, since you're running centrino, which probably means Pentium M and Pentium Ms generally run pretty cool, but that means that their cooling solutions won't draw too much heat either. You could experiment a little bit through the BIOS (if dell allows, since it's a laptop bios) but I really wouldn't recommend overclocking it at all. Overclocking voids the warranty and it isn't as easy to recover a badly OCed laptop chip compared to a desktop's.
The ends wouldn't really be worth the means and the risk involved.

PuR, for his sake, tell me something I didn't know

    how about the video card?
can/should i OC it if possible?

The same goes for the video card. When you OC, you tell your components to generate more heat. Your laptop isn't exactly the "extreme gaming" type, ie like the XPS gII so what they have for cooling isn't ideal.
Laptops already deal with a lot of heat problems (which lead to the use of noisy fans and bulky cooling devices etc) and its a compromise between performance and portability. Generally, Laptops aren't very good with overclocking, and I would recommend against it. Overclocking video cards isn't very fruitful in the first place, and from the miniscule amount you may be able to squeeze out of your go 6800 on your laptop, you really wouldn't see any performance increase as a result of the increased heat.

They DO make external coolers for a laptop, but these are for extended use where the battery may overheat. As has been said, OCing a laptop isn't generally a good idea.
And BIOS overclocking in a DeLL is not possible. You would have to use a third party software to OC and a. you wouldn't get too much out of it(maybe a couple hundred Mhz..i.e. not worth the trouble or risk to your comp) and b. it wouldn't be very stable, certainly not stable enough to run a game/app for any extended length of time.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I hope this helps.

And as I've stated in other threads about OCing, you (and all) are more than welcome to PM me with any questions. If I'm not around, there are more than enough capable OCers around here to help you out like Squeaky, OTZ, or napoleonic.
