Default AVG as anti virus - any good?

I was wondering what people's opinions are about AVG Free Edition as an anti virus program. Is it as good as something such as Norton or McAffee's, better, or worse? What are your thoughts?

I used to have Norton, but once the subscription ran out I just used a free program called Avast. I haven't had any problems yet (6ish months I think). But I've heard AVG is pretty good.

Best out there without a huge amount of overhead or money involved. I have a registered copy of norton I got with my school program, and I still use AVG.

AVG is probably the best free anti-virus software available(IMO). I too have Norton's and still run AVG.
It has caught a couple things that slipped through Norton's.
AVG isn't THE best, period, but it should be used as a suite with some of the more high profile security programs available (i.e. Nortons, McAfee, etc...). But if you don't have antivirus software, it's WAY better than not running any at all.

As to the Norton's subscription...Im running Norton's '03. When my subscription runs out, I uninstall it wipe it from the registry and reinstall....and I'm still up to date. Updated last night as a matter of fact.

I have long experience with AVG and find the new version a solid improvement on 6.0. Its very strong for being free and manages to remove or at least quarantine even powerful viruses.

It updates regulary, and is much more user friendly than some commercial anti-viruses. Our whole institution in fact uses it now.

I dislike how Norton for instance hijacks you system at certain moments... everything in AVG works prefectly in the background, and the user control is very extensive.

If you have a firewall, or protected server I would not install the email scanner though, as it really slows down outlook.

    I Strongly strongly recommend AVG

When I think of d/l a free virus protector i think "Why not?" All it is is something else to protect your computer. Not sure if I use norton, but i use Spybot AD, adaware SE, ZoneAlarm, and McaFee. Since I have heard about AVG I will probably download it. The more the better and remebers, Why not?

Cheers for the replies. I'm a bit low on cash, so AVG seems like a good fit.
