Supercharged Armored Elephants?

Hey guys, first of all, just want to say that I just downloaded the mod yesterday and I really like it. It's a bit of a challenge but I'm enjoying it so far. However, the last battle I fought I ran into a bit of a problem that I'm hoping you can help me with.

I attacked 1 stack of Carthaginians with a 2 stack army. Among the Carthage troops were 2 units of elephants. I dispatched most of the Carthaginian troops relatively easily with minor losses, including one unit of elephants, but the final elephant unit, a group of armored elephants, just DECIMATED my army. The elephants literally killed about 1.5 stacks worth of Romans without suffering a single casualty.

Am I doing something wrong? Is this a bug, or are armored elephants just that good? Army was mostly hastati with a few other odd units thrown in like velitates and slingers.

The armored ellies are practically invincible to everything except javelins and spears (in that order) velites are your best bet to kill ellies! If you've run out of ammo for those or they get killed/routed, your 2nd best option is to use your Triarii (given that you have already used your missiles from hastati/principes already). Arrows and swords are useless.

worst come to worst send up your trari against them. expect 100% losses though, but hopefully they'll do enough to make the elephants go amock.


1 question about triari, does it make a diff whether they use their spears or swords?

Thanks for the tips guys. I guess that explains why the first unit was destroyed easily and not the second, I ran out of ammo! Unfortunately I only have a unit or two of velitates, hopefully if I conserve my hastati javelins it will be enough to take those pesky elephants out.

with practice one unit of velites is more than enough to take out a unit of elephants, if not more

Yeah just dont waste the ammo on anything else. You can use any missile troops to soften them up and then hit em hard with javelins
