How do you vote, and why?
Myself, I cannot vote yet.
I vote for what I think is best for me.
I vote for what I think is best for my country.
I vote for what I think is best for those I care about
I don't vote.
None of above

Well, I can't vote until next year, but even if I could have I wouldn't have voted last year, both major candidates were poor. I hate both the Democrats and the Republicans
But of course, I'd vote for what is best for my country - which neither Obama nor McCain are.
I won't vote for what I consider to be best for me., otherwise I'd just vote for whoever offered me the most money, be it in tax cuts, or handouts.
Personally I vote for whats best for my country followed closely by whats best for me but the two are very similar.

My Political Profile
well, i go to the local polling station set up for the election, the reps outside have a look at my poll card, read out the number to bloke inside, i go in, he writes it down, hands me the voting slip, i go to the booth, tick the box i want, walk over to the ballot box and put it inside, then leave..ah.. i see, well, i dont do it for any of the reasons you put there, it depends on the circumstance and on whats at stake.
one man one vote. this man votes for the man whos vote he has. i vote for what i think represents my idea of whats best for me and my country.
I voted that I would vote for what is best for me, but I'm not sure. I think a lot of people vote for what is best for them really, they just think the option which is best for them is also best for the country (like I think centre-right politics is probably the best way to go for both me and the country). We shouldn't forget that our views of what is best for everyone are heavily influenced by our own opinions of a particular party or regime.
Having written that post, I don't think it makes much sense, but what the hell.
I've skipped the last 2 elections, its time to get rid of the "2 party system." When someone I actually believe will help this country runs I'll vote for them.
I vote for whatever is best for me and the surrounding area. My country (America) is filled with so many crackpot people that have these wild ideas that they think they know whats best for everyone. I feel no obligation to join their ranks.
I vote for what I think is best for the personal liberty of all individuals.
Seeing as that's never an option, I really don't vote...
Well, I'm back again.
I vote for who I think shares my values the most. I don't really care about economic policies since I do not make my own money yet (I'm 18). I voted for the Nationalists a few months ago since they have many of the same social views as me and a broad centrist approach to economics.
Anyway I sometimes do wonder if I would vote Conservative/Liberal if I was richer or for the Communists/Social Democrats/Socialists if I was poor. I prefer to think I would still put my values first and my economic needs be those handouts or tax cuts second, but who knows.

This presupposes that all elections are equivalent. They're not.
While I am sure that my county commissioners have interesting thoughts on healthcare reform, I am far more interested in their thoughts on eminent domain and zoning.
If I voted for what was best for me I wouldn't be a socialist.
I vote for the man who looks like he will screw up the country the least. Haven't had a man run for office who would appeared like he would actually improve the country in my voting lifetime.
BTW Hotspur, who is that chick in your sig. I've seen her before but can't place the name and it's driving me insane.
Well, I should think that if you are looking at the big picture, then each of your options would go together. That is:
if I want to do what's best for ME, then it might seem like I should go on wellfare, watch TV all day, and what have you.
However, if I realize the following:
(a: this will ruin my health and my work ethic and make my a slovenly pig, thereby lowering my quality of life
(b: although this stands to make me some money today, eventually people like me will drain the system and then the whole country will collapse, and then I'll be helpless after years of dependence on wellfare...
then voting based on what's best for ME turns out to be the same as what's best for my loved ones and what's best for my country.
So to distinguish between them means that you have a very short-term perspective.

If they assure me that my vote is going to be counted, I'll vote for my country.
