Default Custom General Creation not fuctioning

A while back I wanted to make a William Wallace character for Scotland in Vanilla M2:TW.

Instead of ripping it out of Kingdoms I decided to just script it out.

I added both "William" and "Wallace" names in the 'descr_names' in (what I think is) their proper area.

I then went in did a simple copy n' paste character in the 'descr_strat' file.

When I play the game, it doesn't crash. My Character shows up, only he has no name. So it's some kind of an error in recognizing the name on the list. I've tried doing this twenty different ways. I can't figure it out.

I figured if I'd upload the two files you folks could take a look at it and tell me if I'm missing something obvious.

    Thanks.
    Well, I'm back again.

You will have to see that his name is also entered in the text\names.txt file.
    - Assuming he is scottish, his first name should be entered like this in descr_names:
    faction: scotland
    character

    William
    :
    :
    :
    surnames
    Wallace

A typical entry in descr_strat would look like this:
character William Wallace, named character, male, leader, age 40, x 425, y 492

    finally text\names.txt:
    {William}William
    {Wallace}Wallace

These are already contained the vanilla version of the file.

    Hmm.

I've also entered his names into the name list (the one sorted by faction) and created a character.

I might suggest moving the entry for William Wallace up beneath the family members. Currently you have it after the agent entries, so it could be a list order issue that the file needs to have family first then agents.

That is the only thing that could still be wrong (didn't look into that, lazy me).

Make sure you have saved your files in the correct encoding (i.e. do not use the simply windows editor because it might change that).

Are the names "William" and "Wallace in descr_names_lookup.txt?

No, but I was under the impression that descr_names_lookup.txt does not come into play when creating characters with custom names.

For example, even though the text does not contain "William" or "Wallace" is doesn't not contain the names of characters already in the game either, such as "Rufus".
    Well, I'm back again.

God I wish I knew that earlier! Would've saved me a LOT of time

I just remembered that I was having this exact same problem a couple of months back with a name not showing up for a new character. I just wish I could remember how I fixed it! Have you tried deleting names.txt.strings.bin in data\text?

Most if not all of the _enums and _lookup files aren't needed. There's a coding file and a strings file, no need for a forwarding file really. There's a couple I have sitting around as legacy I need to remove, but all of them should be removable.

    The plot thickens...

I went into the descr_strat file and changed his first name from "William" to "Alexander" and we've got a winner.

Some thought: delete the data\text\names.string.bin file. Maybe it did not regenerate after you made changes in the txt file.

I just did and tried it again, with the same result.

I currently have two generals made one with the first name 'William' and another with the last name 'Wallace'.

The William General doesn't have a name, while the Wallace general has his name intact.

If I can get the William general to work, then I'll be able to combine both.

It doesn't help that Scotland's first names are not in alphabetical order. They appear as such:

    Silly idea:

Add this name to the first names of scotland:
    Willi_am

Then add this to names.txt and delete the string.bin version:
    {Willi_am}William

Now change the first name in descr_strat from william to willi_am

What the hell, doing it right now.

    [EDIT:] Tried it, same result.

I'm convinced that the reason this isn't working is that the name file in the Date folder is not recognizing William as a Scottish Name.

Does it have to be in alphabetical order in order to function properly?

Because it was out of order when I got it vanilla.

try dding it to surname instead of.

    {Wallace}Wallace

    try

    {Wallace}William Wallace

and add in a Sir as the 1st name nad you will get Sir Willaim Wallace.

tho this is temporary sence it will ahve side effects cause you might get Sir the Just and whatnot. also if he has kids they will be known like Malcom William Wallace.

One other possibility: there is a William for England as well. Maybe you have to add one more William entry to data\text\names?
