    Default Memory

I have 256MB of ram, I want to increase my speed on the battle field, When I have around 8,000 men on the field it lags bad, but not badly but I want to have a perfect battle.

8,000 men on the field with no lag.

Now what kind of memory do I need to buy?

I also have an ATI 9600 XT.
    THANKS.

256 MB of RAM!? Win XP by itself can use that up easily.

You need at LEAST 512mb, around 1gb if you play games which obviously you do.

Make sure its DDR as well and get one of those 2 packs.

What mother board have you got? What processor have you got? Lastly what the memory that you already have is it a single stick of 256 or two 128s?

Ok. Cheapest option would be to buy a second 256 of RAM. If your processor is oldish say <1.6Ghz speed then that is what I'd suggest. No point in running lots of ram if your processor holds you back.

If it runs at a faster speed then 1.6Ghz and your PC is fairly new then your PC may benefit from 1 Gig of RAM. As the other posters have said 2x512 sticks would be the norm.

Your graphics/video card is fine. Obviously your budget comes in here.

Do you know what FSB your processor and RAM run at?

You can find this information in your BIOS settings or using diagnistoc software such as 'SiSoft Sandra'.

as long as you have 2 open slots, your mobo should be able to support 3 more sticks of RAM of up to 1gb each, i'd go with 2 512mb sticks.
Go download the program called "CPU-Z" to find our your processor

I'd just go ahead and get a 512mb stick, and maybe even 2 if you can afford it. In general, RAM is independant of CPU in terms of capacity.

OK so still decent CPU speed. Dosen't help nail down the type of memory or RAM speed you already have though.
Your CPU first came out in 2003. It runs at 133 Front Side Bus Speed (FSB). All the newest CPUs now run at 200FSB.
Unfortunately very shortly afterwards Memory speed moved from 2100 to 3200 (FSB 133 to 200) so the type of RAM you already could be either. Your motherboard will 'probably' run the newest memory but i'd be guessing.

If you're trying to match the RAM you already have you still need to find out what it is.
Buying completely new you need to find out what motherboard you have.

Can you see any markings on your RAM stick? Or see any serial codes on your mother board?

Do you know your way around the BIOS options?
