Default Do women have no rights to their body?

The article below is about a Florida court insisting a pregnant woman be hospitalized against her will because she was having complications.

I know there are so many different angles to take this. But what kind of precedent does this create. A woman can not have say over her body. This is just ridiculous.

<H1>ACLU Asks Florida Court To Protect The Rights Of Pregnant Women

"Faced with similar cases, courts throughout the country have made clear that pregnant women have a right to make decisions about their own health, including refusing medical care.

    Monday August 3rd, 2009

Tallahassee, FL – The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Florida today filed a friend-of-the-court brief opposing the state’s decision to force a pregnant woman to remain hospitalized against her will.

"Women do not give up their right to determine the course of their own medical care when they become pregnant," said Diana Kasdan, a staff attorney with the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project. "Faced with similar cases, courts throughout the country have made clear that pregnant women have a right to make decisions about their own health, including refusing medical care."

In March 2009, the Circuit Court of Leon County ordered Samantha Burton – a mother of two suffering from pregnancy complications – to be indefinitely confined to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and forced to undergo any and all medical treatments deemed necessary to save her fetus. After three days of state-compelled hospitalization, Ms. Burton suffered fetal demise and was released from the hospital.

"We should all be alarmed by Florida’s wholly unwarranted intervention in Samantha Burton’s care," said Randall Marshall, Legal Director of the ACLU of Florida. "Not only is it unconstitutional for the state to override a pregnant woman’s decision to refuse medical treatment, but the medical community, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Women’s Association, and the American Medical Association, strongly advises against it.”

According to the ACLU’s brief, “f the decision below stands, it invites State requests for court intervention in nearly all aspects of pregnant women’s behavior and medical judgments. In turn, some women will be discouraged from coming to a hospital for pregnancy care if they know that any disagreement may lead to forced medical treatment. Such a result does not advance maternal and fetal health by any measure and is not constitutionally permissible.”

The today’s brief was filed in the District Court of Appeal, First District, State of Florida, on behalf of the ACLU, the ACLU of Florida, and the American Medical Women’s Association.

[I]Today's case is Burton v. Florida, No. ID09-1958. Lawyers on the ACLU's friend-of-the-court brief include Kasdan of the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project; and Marshall of the ACLU of Florida.

This a issue where the anti-abortion religious folks are over protecting unborn children at the expenseof women. They want to make women vessels of pregnancy.

Well yes, why certainly. Unless you are pregnant of course.

In that case comitting suicide would be criminally negligent.

I'm afraid you are going to have to ride this sudden depression thing out for....hey it's less than 1 year. Not so bad right? Then you can have yourself a suicidal bonanza. (In most countries.)
The best way to reveal yourself for the attention mongering reality ignoring vanity ridden snot nosed beast that you are is by continuing to make those sweeping trendy but out of touch generalizations that you love so much. In case you were wondering.

Please tell me you're being sarcastically sarcastic.
The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State. - James Madison

I was indeed being intentionally over the top. Defining life is just something humanity can not win a debate about. I can show a vegetarian an aborted fetus, and a vegetarian can show me a video of cows screaming and crying and worrying about their loved ones as they are being slaughtered. I might feel a little bad for those cows in spite of myself, but the beef will taste just as juicy and sweet to me, if not a little sweeter, knowing what those cows went through in order for me to purchase chunks of them to cook and eat with possibly potatoes.

If the vegetarian was pro status quo abortion from the begining, maybe they will feel a little bad for the fetus, maybe they won't, but in the end they will maintain their "that fetus is not my body" attitude and that will be that.

They already have rights to their sink and ironing board. Jeez, what more do they want? Now their bodies too....jesus......where does it end.

I actually agree with the ACLU, if she didn't want to go to the hospital she shouldn't have to go.

Oh, the 21st century is supposed to be the century where women can kill their babies?

All this has to do with women is that only women get pregnant. I promise, I don't like men killing their babies either.

The point is a small yet-unborn-child child is another body.

Yes. A woman has a 100% right to mistresshood over her own body - in every regard - but when with child there are two to consider.

    The Question is: Is it?

If it is, then isn't it in the woman's rights to detach it from hers - in which case it would die.

If it isn't, in the case that since the 2 are attached to eachother and essentially 1 "body", then its hers to do whatever she wishes.

If a woman 'really' wants an abortion, all it would take is starving the body of several key nutrients, causing a spontaneous natural abortion.
