Do you mean like at the gateway entrance to a wall? Or just generally on the battle field? The numbers and mass has something to do wit the spreading out and pushing backwards while most infantry in MTW2 don't have a set formation.

Best thing you can do is set the formation and then push "guard" button. They should try and stay generally in the same place but will often still spread out a bit. It can be essential to use guard in lopsided battles though because if your line falls apart when 1 unit chases a router it can be very dangerous.
