The European Union's population is on course to break through the 500 million mark in 2009, new figures from the bloc's statistics agency indicated on Monday.

The total number of people living in the European Union's 27 states rose by 2.1 million, or 0.4 per cent, over 12 months to January and now stands at 499.8 million people, the latest figures from Eurostat showed.

It was the fourth year in a row that the population had risen and comes despite a drop in the birthrate in Germany, the EU's most populous country.

The increase was down to a moderate rise in the birth rate while the death rate had remained relatively constant, said Eurostat.

For while 5.4 million babies had been born across the EU 27 nations, up 0.3 per cent on the previous year, 4.8 million people died over the same period - the same rate as the previous year.

Germany bucked the trend, recording 675,000 births against 844,000 deaths, which meant Germany's total population dropped 168,000 in 2008 to 82.1 million people.

The highest increase in the birth rate was an 0.8 per cent jump recorded in Lithuania, which amounted to 35,000 births. But its population continued to fall because the country recorded 44,000 deaths.

In contrast, the population in France increased by 368,000 to 64.4 million people; in Spain by 545,000 to 45.8 million; and in Italy by 434,000 to 60.1 million.

Britain's population increased 441,000 to 61.6 million.

Apparently, within the next 25 years, the population is set to flatline and then start decreasing. Especially Italy and Germany. France and Britains is going to keep going up.

Governments are going to do what all these criminal financiers did recently by just delaying the inevitable and making it worse via denial. This world system is going to crash, people - there won't be enough food for everyone within your lifetimes - they'll just delay it until the killing becomes a necessity. dont be silly, we have enough food. political problems from high immigration and EXTREMELY low birth rate is a far more severe threat than over population (remember the 70's people?)

I experienced a 99.9% single colour, single culture for most of my formative years. This is something few people in the world have shared, and thus I feel a tad blessed in having had this experience, and being able to look back on it and compare. Today's multiculturalism is complete compared to what we had back then. It's completely criminal that it was abandoned. Treason, actually.

This is true. But we were concerned about hippies and bums taking drugs back then and heavy metal, not suicide bombings, terror, inter-ethnic violence, religious struggles &c. Oh, and we used to talk a lot about rugby and cricket. There was no dismembered babies involved.

well if you want to use an analogy as an argument ok ill bite. Western Europeans immigrated to America and kicked the indians ass and replaced their culture with ours and im glad, i just dont want western european culture to be replaced in europe like the indian culture got replaced in america.
