    Default New Unit Description Writer

    Hello everyone,

Well I've volunteered to help out writing unit descriptions and Tone has tasked me with the job of writing them for the pre-marian Roman units.

So I've had a bit of a look around but I can't seem to find a definitive list of unit's or something so does anyone have such a list for the Roman units or anything else that will help my work?

Oh, and by the way, I've looked in various threads and congratulations, the mod looks absolutely awesome and I'm sure everyone will love it.

best thing to do is go into the data file, "descr export units" that has all the units from the game listed, all the roman units are listed first, and the premarian ones are the first in the list. Of course there may be an easyer way but i dont know it, alternatively you could go into custom battles choose rome as one of the sides and then you can see all the units with their current descriptions.

Does this mean all the unit's are the same off RS I, or am I allowed to download the Beta or something?

    The units are these:

    Roman velites
    Roman Polybian cohorts
    Roman triarii
    Roman equites
    Allied velites
    Allied polybian cohorts
    Allied triarii
    Allied equites
    Italian medium cavalry
Campanian cavalry (description may have been done already)
    Samnite spearmen
    Lucanian spearmen

then there are some allied AOR units like:
    Aedui cavalry
    and so on...

Cheers for the list. Are Polybian Cohorts the sort of VE Legions from RS I, the evolution of Hastati and Principes into one standard unit?

Yes. We figured that although it probably didn't happen in reality until about 2-5 years after our campaign start, that that was a fair enough way of doing things within the confines of the game.

Yes, basicly by around 218 BC the distinction between what citizens qualified to be in the Principe's class and what citizens qualified to be in the Hastati class had become quite blurred and less distinct. So it was decided to make them into one unit.

Just post the descriptions that you do here so Arnspac and I can do a check over, and so people can generally check them.

oh and download the mod and have a look at the premarian units first.

tone - we already have the Campanian Cavalry description.

Tone: The horn blowers are just amazing, simply amazing.

Macky: OK, I understand what you mean with them. I'll post up my descriptions here.

Titus Pullo: I'm sure I will, I can't wait for my connection to speed up so I can get playing straight away.

    Another few questions if you don't mind;

    1. What's the story about the Velites shield as I always believed they didn't have one?

    2. Do we keep the same unit descriptions for the same unit if it's allied, for example, do I keep the same description for Allied Velites and Roman Velites like with the Equites?

I've yet to see any depiction of velites without shields.
Fro the Allied units it'd be worth maybe talking about the process of Romanisation of settlements. maybe say something about them being given the same training as the Romans but because they're not Roman citizens their morale is just a fraction lower?

Surely we shouldn't have allied equites? After all, Equite came from the Equestrian Order and you had to be a roman citizen to be in that.

I think the Romans would have allowed wealthier non Roman citizens to provide a cavalry force. Equites is simply Latin for 'horseman', equestrian class were only given that name to mark citizens who had the financial clout to buy a horse. I cant see the sons of the Conton or Tarentine nobility fighting on foot.

Tone: I stand corrected, my mind went funny about the Velites thing. I'll mention about the Romanization of provinces and how they were equipped and trained in the same manner, but not being given priority and not being Roman meant that they have decreased morale.

Or the fact that they know they won't get the same preferential treatment as Romans do if seriously injured in battle. They (probably) won't get the same insurance (if soldiers got any) for injuries in battle. I think they may not have been able to retire to live in rome either.

Yes, I think the Allied Equites are just Allied Cavalry but not the same as Italian medium cavalry and Campanian cavalry. Also do you need a description for Early General because that's not done?
