Custom Battles-Not Working

If i want to do a custom battle, it works fine unless i select a building like a fort, cvillage, castle, or anything. the second i select the building some message pops up (dont remember what is says) and i need to press ok and the game exits itself out.
anyone ever had this same problem?
i didnt install the 1.1 patch, could that be it? cuz whenever i try to install the patch a msg pops up and the internet exits itself out.
