It depends.

Some can be lost and some does only dissapear when you are killed in battle.
What exactly do you want to get rid of?

You could drag the bad ones to a different general.

You can only remove some reitnues by giving them to other generals by clicking and dragging them to the other general. They must be in the same army /city though. Some Retinues you cant give to others.
